Educational Technology Lesson 4 ● Teaching with Dramatized Experiences; ● Demonstrations in Teaching; ● Making the Most of Community Resources. Teaching with Dramatized Experiences Teaching with Dramatized Experiences Dramatic experiences come next to contrived experiences in the cone of experience. ● Do these dramatic experiences require us to be dramatic in our entrance and in our lesson presentations? ● Teaching with Dramatized Experiences Dramatic is something that is stirring, affecting or moving. ● Dramatic Entrance is something that catches and holds attention, and has emotional impacts. ● Teaching with Dramatized Experiences ● Dramatized Experiences can range from: – Formal Plays – Pageants – Tableau – Pantomime – Puppets – Role-playing Teaching with Dramatized Experiences Plays depict life, character, culture, or a combination of the three. ● They offer excellent opportunities to portray vividly important ideas about life. ● Teaching with Dramatized Experiences Pageants are usually community dramas that are based on local history. ● An example is a historical pageant that traces the growth of a school. ● Teaching with Dramatized Experiences Pantomime is an “art of conveying a story through bodily movements.” ● The effects of pantomime to the audience depends on the movements of the actors. ● Teaching with Dramatized Experiences Tableau is a picture-like scene composed of people against a background. ● Teaching with Dramatized Experiences Puppets - A puppet is an inanimate object or representational figure animated or manipulated by an entertainer, who is called a puppeteer. ● Puppets can present ideas with extreme simplicity. ● Teaching with Dramatized Experiences ● Types of Puppets puppets – flat, black silhouette made from lightweight cardboard shown behind a screen. – Shadow Teaching with Dramatized Experiences ● Types of Puppets puppets – flat, cut-out figures tacked to a stick with one or more movable parts, and are operated below the stage through wires or rods. – Rod Teaching with Dramatized Experiences ● Types of Puppets puppets – make use of gloves which small costumed figures are attached. – Glove-and-finger Teaching with Dramatized Experiences ● Types of Puppets – flexible, jointed puppets operated by strings or wires attached to a cross bar and maneuvered from directly above the stage. – Marionettes Teaching with Dramatized Experiences Role-Playing is an unrehearsed, unprepared and spontaneous dramatization of a situation where assigned participants are absorbed by their own roles. ● Demonstrations in Teaching Demonstrations in Teaching Demonstration is a public showing and emphasizing of the salient merits, utility, efficiency, etc. of an article or product. ● Demonstrations in Teaching ● Components of a Demonstration – Audience – Speaker – Method, Product, Proof Demonstrations in Teaching ● Using demonstration in classroom: – Establish – Avoid rapport. COIK fallacy (Clear Only If Known) – Watch for key points Demonstrations in Teaching ● Point to Remember – A good demonstration is an audio-visual demonstration. – Before demonstration: set objectives, prepare materials, plan the steps, and rehearse. – During demonstration: sustain the interest of the audience, keep it simple, check for understanding, have a summary, and provide hand-outs (if possible). Making the Most of Community Resources Making the Most of Community Resources Field Trip - A field trip or excursion, is a journey by a group of people to a place away from their normal environment. ● Making the Most of Community Resources ● Field Trips must be planned precisely. – Preliminary planning (teacher) – Secondary planning (teacher and other people) – Taking the field trip – Post-field trip follow-up. Making the Most of Community Resources ● During planning: – Plan the entire lesson (of the field trip). – Arrange with school heads the details of the trip. – Plan then contact the places to visit. – Provide a route plan. – Discuss objectives, procedure, and other things concerning the lesson with the students. – Communicate with the parents. Making the Most of Community Resources ● Disadvantages – It is costly. – It involves logistics. – It is extravagant with time. – Has elements of uncertainty. Making the Most of Community Resources ● Other Community Resources – Community – Public Resource Speaker and Private Libraries – Botanical Gardens – Historical Places – Scenic Spots Summary Summary When applying other bands of the cone of experience: ● Satisfy the needs of the students. ● Satisfy the lesson objectives. Know the pros and cons of the instructional material or educational technology to be used. ● ● Prepare the material/technology ahead of time. ● Follow other guidelines. DAGHANG SALAMAT! Thank you!
