Important Information from Rime
of the Ancient Mariner
• This was the opening poem from the
book he wrote with William
Wordsworth called Lyrical Ballads.
• It is considered a very important work
in romantic poetry and shows the
attributes common to romanticism
• Rime means: ice tuft or ice chunk.
Definitions
• Atonement- amends or
reparation made for an injury or
wrong; expiation. Commonly
associated with Christianity as a
reconciliation with God.
• Penance- voluntary selfpunishment to make amends for a
sin.
For the Mariner to be forgiven, he
must go through three stages of
atonement:
• 1) Confession- he talked to
the hermit
• 2) Remorse- he ultimately
felt bad
• 3) Penance- he now must
spread the word
