The story of the unsinkable that sank… Titanic Timeline… The Titanic was built in the shipyard of Harland and Wolff, Belfast. The construction of the Titanic began on March 31st, 1909. Two years later on May 31st the Titanic hull was launched and in January 1912 the lifeboats were installed. Then in March 1912 it was assembled in Belfast and finally the Titanic was completed on March 31st, 1912. The Titanic’s Route… The Titanic was made in Belfast but her first voyage was from Southampton in England. She stopped in other places also to pick up passengers in: • Cherbourg in France • Queenstown in the Republic of Ireland The route that should have been! Life on the Titanic… • • • On the Titanic there were three different classes, third class, second class and first class. We will explain the life for each class.. Third Class Many of those travelling third class were emigrants travelling to the America from Ireland. A third class ticket cost between £3 and £8 The information below is about an Irish person who survived.. Irish There were around 120 Irish passengers on the Titanic. Most of them were emigrants hoping for a better life in America. Most of them did not make it. However, Anna Kelly who had gone up on deck to investigate what had happened, survived in lifeboat 16. She later became a nun. First and Second Class… Second Class • Passengers travelling second class on the Titanic enjoyed a luxury trip. Titanic was also the first ship to have an electric elevator for second class passengers. • A second class ticket cost about £13 First Class • The maiden voyage of the Titanic had attracted a number of rich passengers. • A first class parlour suite cost £870 while a first class berth cost £30.
