The Theme
Good actions are rewarded and bad actions are
punished in life.
Motifs
1. Tool- People are used as tools.
2. Star- People follow things in their
lives like stars.
3. Prison- There are more types of prisons
in life then the ones in jail. People can
create prisons for themselves through
pride or blindness etc.
Pip
Pip is rewarded by
remaining with his love,
Estella, like he always
wanted.
“I saw no shadow of another parting from
her”
– Pip
Estella
•Estella is rewarded in the end.
•She is not the type of character
that would be expected to be
rewarded in the beginning, but
she does suffer in her marriage to
Drummel and changes because of
it.
•Her reward is to never be parted
from Pip.

Miss Havisham
“On this day of
the year, long
before you were
born, this heap
of decay, was
brought here. It
and I have
worn away
together. The
mice have
gnawed at it,
and sharper
teeth than teeth
of mice have
gnawed at
me.”

Miss
Havisham was
punished and
rewarded in the
novel. She was
punished because
she was seeking
revenge to all
men. She was
rewarded because
she received
forgiveness from
Pip.
Joe
Joe is rewarded through
Marriage to Biddy for
making good choices
throughout the story.
Quote: “Pip, dear old
chap, life is made of ever
so many partings welded
together” “if there’s been
any fault at all-today it’s
mine”
•
Magwitch is rewarded in
this novel. As Magwitch
breathes his last breath
he learns that his
daughter Estella is still
alive. He is also rewarded
by dying a peaceful death,
knowing that Pip is a loyal
friend to him.
"Look'ee here, Pip. I'm
your second father. You're
my son – more to me nor
any son. I've put away
money, only for you to
spend”
". . . And when it come to character, warn't
it Compeyson as had been to the school,
and warn't it his schoolfellows as was in
this position and in that, and warn't it him
as had been know'd by witnesses in such
clubs and societies, and nowt to his
disadvantage? And warn't it me as had
been tried afore, and as had been know'd
up hill and down dale in Bridewells and
Lock-Ups? And when it come to speechmaking, warn't it Compeyson as could
speak to 'em wi' his face dropping every
now and then into his white pockethandkercher - ah! and wi' verses in his
speech, too - and warn't it me as could only
say, 'Gentlemen, this man at my side is a
most precious rascal'? And when the
verdict come, warn't it Compeyson as was
recommended to mercy on account of good
character and bad company, and giving up
all the information he could agen me, and
warn't it me as got never a word but Guilty?
...

Compeyson is punished
for all the crimes he
committed through
dying an extremely
painful, gruesome
death.
Wemmick
Wemmick is
rewarded also by
marriage to Miss
Skiffins for helping

Here's a church, lets
go in!” “Halloa here’s
Miss Skiffins! Lets
have a wedding!’

infants to be
nutcrackered into

Mr.Jaggers
Mr.Jaggers is the only exeption to
the rules because he is nether
punished or rewarded for his actions
in the story. He washes his hands of
the bad deeds he’s done.
Quote:" My
guardian was in
his room washing
his hands with
soap....of
remarking that he
washed his clients
off, as if he was a
surgeon or
dentist”
