Lizards are reptiles that live in every continent in the world, excluding Antarctica. Lizards have four legs and external ears, which distinguishes them from snakes. What lizards eat • Some lizards eat insects, bugs and spiders. Others are vegetarian and will only eat plant material, fruit or vegetables (apples are a favorite for some lizards). Some species of lizards eat other lizards! If you are getting a lizard as a pet make sure you ask what type of food your particular lizard eats. Every species of lizard eats different things! The upper and lower eyelids of chameleons are joined, leaving just a small hole for them to see through. They can move their eyes independently however, allowing them to look in two different directions at the same time. Chameleons have long tongues which they rapidly extend from their mouth, too fast for human eyes to see properly. Chameleons generally eat insects. Some chameleons have the ability to change color. This helps them communicate with each other and can also be used for camouflage. Geckos have no eyelids. Geckos have unique toes which allow them to be good climbers. Iguanas have a row of spines which run down their back and tail. Green iguanas are popular pets. The Komodo dragon is the largest type of lizard, growing up to 3 metes What will eat a lizard? • There are many kinds, or species, of lizards, and most of them have a lot of predators, or natural enemies. Many kinds of birds eat small lizards. Larger birds of prey such as hawks, owls and eagles hunt , kill and eat lizards. Snakes also eat them, as do many species of mammals such as weasels. The smallest lizard is a tiny gecko. • Characteristics: Most lizards have dry, scaly skin. They have four legs, clawed feet, and a long tail. You can see their outside ear opening. Lizards have a weak tail. A small bump or tug will break it off. This will puzzle the enemy. The lizard can get away. Not all lizards have weak tails. Lizard tails help in balance and movement. The new grown tail is smaller and has no bones. • The largest lizard is the Komodo dragon—it can reach 10 feet in length. Komodo dragons are patient hunters: they bite their prey and wait sometimes for days for the prey’s slow death. • Some lizards, in order to protect themselves, can squirt blood 2-4 feet out of their eyes. • Some lizards can live over 30 years—the record, 33 years and 11 months, is held by a Mexican beaded lizard.
