What’s neW in the
world of Pbis?
Importance of School Climate
California Law – AB 1729
Ammiano. Pupil rights: suspension or
expulsion: alternatives and other means
of correction.
http://www2.ed.gov/policy/gen/guid/
school-discipline/index.html
“Even though national rates
of school violence have
decreased overall, too many
schools are still struggling to
create the nurturing,
positive, and safe
environments that we know
are needed to boost student
achievement and success….
To meet our goal of
preparing all students for
college, careers, and civic
life.”
2014
California Assembly Bill 1729
“This bill would authorize a school district to document the other
means of correction used and place that documentation in
the pupil’s record. The bill would also specify that other means
of correction include, but are not limited to, among other
things,
a positive behavior support approach
with tiered interventions that occur during the
school day on campus, a conference between
school personnel, the pupil’s parent or guardian, and the
pupil, participation in a restorative justice program, and
after-school programs that address specific behavioral issues or
expose pupils to positive activities and behaviors.”

Important Things to Remember
• You are the coach; you are not the Team
• As a Coach, your job is to make it as easy as
possible for the teams to be successful in
developing & implementing SW PBIS, but not to
do it for them
• Your job is to build capacity and expertise in the
building – essentially to work yourself out of a job
• This means you should not facilitate PBIS Team
meetings at the school sites, unless you are
modeling how to lead an effective meeting
• Build Capacity
– I Do – We Do – You Do
