Imagine that this pile of DVDs is yours and you are looking for a certain one. How will you find it? Maybe you need to get organized. How might you organize your DVD collection? Now imagine 20,000 or so books sitting around in no particular order and trying to find just the one you need for your research project. Thanks to Melvil Dewey we don’t have to worry about that. It tells you where that book “lives” in the media center. Three Groups of Books Nonfiction: Dewey Decimal System Fiction: Alphabetically by author’s last name Biography & Autobiography: Alphabetical by the name of the person the book is about 796.332 FIC 92 ADA STI STI Nonfiction Call Numbers three numbers to the left of the decimal 609.75 no limit on numbers to the right 644.805652 The more numbers you add to the right of the decimal, the more specific the subject is. BIG IDEA #2: Call numbers have two parts. What are they? Dewey number Letters from the author’s last name Dewey Decimals Think of a Dewey number as if it were dollars and cents! For example: 595.23 comes before 595.30 398.20 comes before 398.21 796.33 comes before 796.332 When in doubt, add a 0 (zero) to even out the digits after the decimal.
