The Gist Of The Story
• The story brings out the fact that a scientist devotes all his life
to discover something. But nobody pays any attention to him.
He lives in poverty and neglect. His greatness comes to light
only after his death or when it is too late.
It was 9 o’clock in the evening
After finishing his day’s work the author went to the side of
the river Thomes in London. The lovely display of lights of
the river water had a eyes. While the author was standing
there,he saw a man leaning over the parapet of the
embankment.The man,through not handsome,had a nice
face. He was pale and thin, but he looked intelligence. He
turned his face towards the author and started talking
with him.
He talked of the pleasant weather
and the peaceful river side
Then after a pause, he said that he was fed up with
running about busniess all day.He wanted to leave
everything------- name, wealth and position----and take to
some small trade.the author looked at the man in looked
hopelessly poor.He was in rags.He was unshaven and
looked very dirty. It looked as through he had been left in
a dust—bin for a week. And he was talking of the worries
of a big busniess. The author almost laughed.
The man looked at the author
carefully and said,
• “you will not believe me.I really have plans for a big
business. But there are troubles just now.The fact is……
• I make diamonds.”
“But you are out of work just at
present, I think, "said the author in a
mocking way,
“ I am sick of this.People don’t believe me,” he said
impatiently. Then he unbuttoned his jacket and pulled out
a little canvas bag that was hanging by a cord round his
neck. From the bag he took out a brown pebble, and
handed it to their author.
It looked like an uncut diamond
In order to rest it, the author tried to scratch It with his
pen-knife.He couldn’t.Then he tried the thing on his
watch glass. It easily made a white line across the
glass. The author looked at the man in surprise.”It is a
very big diamond.Where did you get it?”
“I tell you I made it. Give it
back to me, "said the man
• He put it back in the bag hastily and buttoned the
jacket.”I will sell it to you for hundred pounds,”he said in
a whisper.This made the author suspicious again.He
thought that the thing could just be a lump of some hard
substances. And if it was a diamond, how did he get
it?Why should he offer it at a hundred pounds only. The
author thought that the man could be a robber. So he
decided not to buy the thing. But he asked the man how
he had got it.”I made it.” he replied.
“I thought I was going to make
millions, but here I am all penniless.
I had about a thousand pounds when I was twenty-one.
This I earned by a little teaching. I thought it would
enable me to keep my researches going. Now secrecy
was the most important thing if I really wanted to have
lots of money. People should not know it was an artificial
process. One could make diamonds by the ton. So I had
to work alone.
My first experiment
At first I had a little laboratory, but money began to run
out. But I got nearer the thing. Three years ago I solved
the problems of finding the right pressure. My first
experiment resulted in an explosion, yet I didn’t give up.
After a lot of more study. I did another experiment. It cost
me a lot. I got a steel cylinder and put in all my stuff and
my explosive. I built up a fire in my furnace, and went out
for a walk.”
“When I came back the things
were just where I left them"
• Luckily there was no explosive this time. But yet there
was one problem. The process of crystallization had to
be VERY SLOW. It took me two years to cool the
apparatus, letting the temperature to go down slowly
during that time. And I was now quiet without money. I
had hardly a penny.”
`
“I can’t tell you what hardships I
faced while I was making the
diamonds"
• Once for a week I had eaten nothing all day. At last three
weeks ago, I put the fire out. I took my cylinder and
unscrewed it while it was still very hot. I found three big
diamonds and five small ones. A neighbour of mine had
been watching my activities secretly and he told me that
he had reported to the police that I was an anarchist. So
I at once gathered my diamonds and left the house. Now
if I go to a jeweler ,he thinks I am a thief. I am going
about with several hundred thousand pounds-worth of
diamonds round my neck, and without either food or
shelter. You are the first person I have talked to about
my secret.
After hearing the man’s long
story, the author was almost
conviced that the man was not a
thief
• But at that time he did not have hundred pounds with
him pay for the diamond. So he gave the man his card
and asked him to come to his place whenever he
wanted. The man took the card and went away. But
before he went ,he said, "You think I am a thief ! You will
tell the police. I am not coming into a trap. Don't follow
me.”
Afterwards the author got two
letters from him asking him to
send him money to certain
address, but the author didn’t
• Once he himself came to the author’s home, but then the
author was out. The author’s servant said that the man
was very thin, dirty, ragged and had a dreadful cough.
The man had left no message. The author kept
wondering what might have happened to him.
The author says that sometimes
he felt that he had missed a big
opportunity of his life
The man could be dead and his diamonds carelesly
thrown aside. At times the author felt that he should have
taken the risk of buying those diamonds
