If a student does not score at an apprentice
or higher level, he or she will be required
to attend an after school writing
intervention program on site.

Feature Article
Definition:
A newspaper or magazine article that is written to entertain
and inform the reader. It does contain some elements of
the short story and is written with a lead to get the
reader's attention and then uses conversational tone to
present the reader with information to evoke an
emotional response.

Most on-demand writings work well with a five paragraph, 1-3-1
format. The body paragraphs should be power paragraphs.

Situation:
Someone has just donated $1000 to your school. The gift must be used for
one of the extracurricular activities at your school. At their next meeting, the
school council will be making the decision about who gets the money after
hearing suggestions from parents and students.
Writing Task:
Write a speech or letter to the school council suggesting the extracurricular
activity that should receive the donation and explaining why that is the best
choice.

Your school is celebrating Set a Good Example Day. In order to encourage
students to participate in this event, the school paper is going to publish
some feature articles written by students about people who have inspired
them.
WRITING TASK:
Think of a person in your life who sets a good example for you. It could be a
parent, a teacher, a coach, a friend… Write a feature article or letter to
the editor for the school paper telling about how that person sets a good
example for you. Persuade other students in your school to get involved
in Set a Good Example Day as you show how this person has been an
inspiration to you.
