Analysis of sports Performance
Assignment 2
Match and Performance Analysis
Learning Aims
Introduction
• In elite sport today, it can be the smallest margin
between ‘winning and losing’ or ‘success and
failure’, but the impact can be massive.
• Given the huge amount of time, dedication,
investment and reward that is involved in sport
today, sport performers, coaches, and managers
need to understand the importance of observing,
analysing and evaluating sports skills and
techniques when trying to enhance performance.
• As part of your assignment you have to cover
the 3 areas of performance from
• Technical/tactical (shooting, passing, tackling)
• Physiological (speed, strength, agility)
• Psychological (motivation, confidence,
arousal)
• Biomechanical (speed, momentum, motion)
Psychological profiling
• A lot of mistakes can be attributed to
weaknesses in the mental aptitude of the
performer. Coaches should also consider an
athlete's psychological profile if they want to
make sure their athletes' have the best chance
of succeeding.
• The physiological performance of an athlete
does not take place in isolation from the
psychological aspects. The mind body
connection is a strong one and psychological
factors are important. Athletes' undergo all
the normal stresses of life that play on a
person's mind, as well as the specific
psychological factors related to their
performance
• Examples of the aspects you should consider in
the profile are:
• Concentration
• Ability to refocus
• Commitment and determination
• Training commitment
• Team work
• Emotional and physical control
• Relaxation
• Psychological assessment
• One common method that psychologists use to
measure the needs and abilities required for your
sport is to complete a questionnaire. The results
of which can produce a psychological profile to
highlight areas of strength and areas for
development which are important for both
athletes and coaches to understand.
• Please click onto the blog and complete the
questionnaire
Physiological assessment
• Many physiological assessment techniques
exist within sport, some assessment
techniques can be classed as general fitness
tests, and others can be classed as sport
specific fitness tests. Both general and sport
specific tests have advantages and
disadvantages
Task
• What physiological tests can you think off and
what are there advantages and disadvantages.
• 10 mins
• A key advantage of general tests, such as the bleep
test, is that normative data is available which allows
comparisons of athletes of similar ages and abilities.
This also allows targets and goals to be set when
athletes are looking to improve their performance.
• A key advantage of sport specific tests, such as the
Netball Specific Fitness Test (NSFT) for netball
(developed by Gasston and Simpson, 2004), is that the
tests mirror the actual demands of the specific sports
game play. The results produced from undertaking
these specific tests provide coaches and players with
much more specific feedback in regards to their sport.
This allows them to plan training programmes specific
to the demands of the sport to fully prepare the
athletes' for match play or the event.
RUGBY PLAYER: FULLBACK
• What are the physiological demands for this
player?
• large number of intensive efforts of 5 to 15
seconds' duration with less than 40 seconds'
recovery between each bout of high intensity
activity. (anaerobic endurance)
• 2 halfs of 40mins, 15mins half time break
What are the physiological demands of
your chosen sport
• Task
• What are the physiological demands of your
athletes sport
• What physiological tests can you use to test
that component
• Now that you have this data what can you do
with it?
Technical/tactical
• Pick a sport in pairs
• Think of technical and tactical skills in that
sport
• For example number of passes, number of
completed passes, number of passes less than
10 yards
• Think of at least 10
• Put this information into a table.
Nearly There
• What are the 3 areas that we covered?
• What do you think the learning aims were?
• How does the information that we have
covered today relate to the assignment brief
