1.03 Apply the touch method in operating the keyboard while increasing speed and accuracy. Essential Question: What are the correct methods for calculating GWAM while increasing speed and accuracy using correct keyboarding techniques? TECHNIQUE • The form and keying style that a typist uses while operating the keyboard . TOUCH-METHOD • To key by touch rather than by the hunt-and-peck method. POSTURE • The way the typist sits; the way the typist’s arms, wrists, fingers, and legs and feet are placed. WORK AREA • The arrangement of the keyboard, copy, mouse, and other materials on the desk. ALPHABETIC KEYS • Letter keys on the keyboard. ENTER/RETURN • Used to move the cursor down a line. GWAM • GWAM (Gross Words a Minute) is the number of keystrokes a typist can make in a timed period. QWERTY KEYBOARD • The most commonly used keyboard arrangement. SPACE BAR • Used to insert spaces between characters. ACCURACY • The ability to key text without errors. TIMED WRITING • Typing copy for a timed period in order to figure your GWAM rate. STANDARD KEYBOARDING WORD • Five characters or any combination of five characters and spaces. HOW TO DETERMINE KEYBOARDING GWAM • Type for a specific number of minutes (timed writing) as directed by your teacher. • Determine the number of standard keyboarding words you keyed. • Remember: Every five strokes (characters and spaces) count as one word. • Divide the total number of words keyed by the number of minutes that you were timed. FIGURING GWAM FOR A ONE-MINUTE TIMED WRITING • If you typed 40 strokes (characters) in one minute, you would take 40/5 = 8 GWAM FIGURING GWAM FOR A TWO-MINUTE TIMED WRITING • If you typed 40 strokes (characters) in two minutes, you would take (40/5) ÷ 2 = 4 GWAM FIGURING GWAM FOR A THREE-MINUTE TIMED WRITING • If you typed 300 strokes (characters) in three minutes, you would take (300/5) ÷ 3 = 20 GWAM FIGURING TOTAL STROKES FOR A ONE-MINUTE TIMED WRITING FROM GWAM • If you typed 20 GWAM in one minute, you would take (20 *5) = 100 Strokes FIGURING TOTAL STROKES FOR A TWO-MINUTE TIMED WRITING FROM GWAM • If you typed 90 GWAM in two minutes, you would take (90 *5) ÷ 2 = 225 Strokes
