Part Three: Symbols and
Metaphors
 Here
are some well-known symbols. What
do they represent?
 How
do we know
what symbols are
meant to represent?
 Where and how do
we learn this?
 Why do people use
symbols?
Bruno and Shmuel
both have to wear
armbands with
different symbols.
 Why do you think the
Jews were made to
wear symbols?
 What symbols do you
wear in your
everyday life?
 How do they make
you feel?

Some of the different symbols
that Jews had to wear in
WW2

Activity: Design a symbol that you would wear on
an armband to represent yourself.

Why did you choose that design? What does it
mean to you? Who else could wear it?

Now design one for someone else, and put it on
them. How does it feel to be labelled by someone
else? How would you feel if you had to wear it all
the time?
 The
fence is a very important part of the
stage production of The Boy in the Striped
Pyjamas.
What do you think a fence symbolises?



When do you usually
wear pyjamas?
Why does Bruno think
everyone in Out-With
is wearing pyjamas?
How do you think you
would feel if you had to
wear a uniform like
this?
