Assessment Prep Basics SPELLING COUNTS!!!!!!! GRAMMAR COUNTS!!!!!! PUNCTUATION COUNTS!!!!! Movie Title or “Movie Title” Assessment (100 points) Part One: Characterization Part Two: Analyze Quotes Part Three: Textual Evidence Part Four: Comedy Evaluation Part Five: Self-Reflection Part One: Characterization Determined Ethical Excited Adventurous Humorous Faithful Trustworthy Friendly Consistent Creative Compassionate Open-Minded Wise Truthful Reliable Intelligent Sincere Loving Joyful Knowledgeable Powerful Loyal Part One: Characterization Deceitful Bossy Boastful Fussy Greedy Careless Arrogant Gullible Impolite Grumpy Lazy Mean Jealous Narrow-Minded Impulsive Sarcastic Selfish Stingy Sneaky Stubborn Timid Touchy Part One: Characterization Characterize Senator Finnistre Characterization Senator Finnistre Pompous The scene when his aid tried to warn him about Nick Naylor. The senator said that he had debated so many other important people and he could definitely handle Naylor. Here, the senator shows that he is arrogant and pompous. He does not give Naylor any credit and he is so confident in himself, he does not prepare. His pompous attitude lead to his downfall, because Naylor out talked and out smarted him. Part Two: Analyze Quotes Analyze: Requires deep thought and investigation into a topic/thought/idea/quote. If you only have one or two sentences, you did not analyze anything. Think: Why is this quote important? What does it reveal about a character/situation? What was the context it was said in? How can I connect to it? Is it applicable in our society? How does it add to the message of the text? Does it reveal anything about theme? Part Two: Analyze Quotes Analyze the quote: “My job requires a certain…moral flexibility.” – Nick Naylor Part Two: Analyze Quotes “My job requires a certain…moral flexibility.” – Nick Naylor This quote is important because Nick Naylor is acknowledging the fact that his job is not ethical. He knows that he is promoting something that hurts others. We see many characters in this movie who have jobs that need moral flexibility. For example, Heather Holloway, Polly Bailey, and Bobby Jay all go against ethics in their jobs. This quote applies to our society because many jobs that are glorified require people to go against morals. Some of these jobs are, for example, lawyers, musicians, actors, producers, and CEOs. Part Three: Textual Evidence Text = Movie With every answer, provide SPECIFIC evidence. FOR EXAMPLE: “I mean there’s Attila, Genghis, and me, Nick Naylor the face of cigarettes, the Colonel Sanders of nicotine.” –Nick Naylor Do you believe that Nick has judged himself fairly? EXPLAIN. Part Three: Textual Evidence “I mean there’s Attila, Genghis, and me, Nick Naylor the face of cigarettes, the Colonel Sanders of nicotine.” –Nick Naylor Do you believe that Nick has judged himself fairly? EXPLAIN. Although I think Nick’s job is rather offensive, I think it is extreme to compare himself to Attila the Hun and Genghis Khan is extreme. There was a scene where he went to his son’s school and talked to the kids about his job. There, he had kids question the beliefs about cigarettes, possibly leading some of them to smoke. In another scene, he said that if he could convince one person to smoke, he would pay for his trip. The difference, is he is not directly killing anyone. Although he is convincing, and many people are easily influenced, there is a still a choice. The people suffered under Genghis and Attila had no choice. Part Four: Comedy Evaluation Was this a comedy? EXPLAIN USING LANGUAGE FROM YOUR NOTES. Was this a satire? If not, what was it? EXPLAIN USING LANGUAGE FROM YOUR NOTES. Evaluate = Assess = Judge = Score Ask yourself: WHAT IS THE MOVIE’S MESSAGE?!?!?!?! EXPLAIN PROVE IT! Part 5: Self-Connection “If he really wants a cigarette, I’ll buy him his first pack.” –Nick Naylor. Think about this quote. What does it mean? What would you do? Part 5: Self-Connection “If he really wants a cigarette, I’ll buy him his first pack.” –Nick Naylor. Think about this quote. What does it mean? What would you do? I believe this quote shows that Nick truly believes in the freedom of choice. If you choose to poison your body, that is okay. He believes a lot in the freedom of speech and making your own choices. Although he preys on people acting like sheep, he feels you should be self aware. I agree with him, but only to a certain extent. I would never buy my child, or anyone I care about, a cigarette. I do not want to help poison their bodies. I do not want to help them hurt themselves. So my support for independent choices only goes so far. Practice Practice Practice Choose three of the following quotes. ANALYZE AND REFLECT!!!!! 1: “We don’t sell Tic Tacs, we sell cigarettes. And they’re cool, available, and addictive. The job is almost done for us.” – BR “I just need to pay the mortgage.” (to self) “The Yuppie Nuremberg defense.” –Nick Naylor “I’m good at it. Better at doing this than I ever was at doing anything else.” –Nick Naylor “My other interviews have pinned you as a mass murderer, blood sucker, pimp, profiteer, and my personal favorite, yuppie Mephistopheles.” – Heather Holloway “Well, then she’s hardly a credible expert, is she?” –Nick Naylor “I didn’t have to. I proved that you’re wrong, and if you’re wrong I’m right.” -Nick
