1/24/13 You have 90 seconds to write down everything that you can think of that makes reading interesting (not including Mr. Gallup’s charm and amazing good looks). What does it look like? How does it sound? Talk with your partner and share your lists. Make sure you both have good contributions because your name may be drawn to “volunteer” your answer. Listen as Mr. Gallup reads a passage from The Breadwinner. The first time it will be read in a monotone fashion. The same passage will then be read with enthusiasm. Note the differences. Let’s Practice! Read the short passage when Mr. Gallup calls on you, and try to read it with inflection. Reading with inflection improves comprehension. Imagine if The Outsiders had been read in a completely monotone voice. How much of the story do you think you would remember? Would it have captured your attention, or would you have been more likely to zone out? • • • • Today we will be practicing and having a Readers’ Theater. Our play-acting with The Outsiders left something to be desired, so we’re going to practice making our reading interesting and full. Split into groups of 7 or 8. Each person will have a part. Practice reading your parts with expression and inflection. This DOES NOT mean with over-the-top antics or accents. Remember, stay respectful. • • • Maryam will also be the Stage Manager for your group. They will be responsible for keeping your group on task, and knowing who comes in when. They will signal people if they miss their entrance. Only the person who has the part should be talking. Only three people in the entire class should be talking at a time. Mr. Gallup will be coming around to check that you are following along by using your finger to keep place.
