TOTAL DEFENCE DAY 11 Feb 2014 (Tuesday) 30 Years of Total Defence: Because You Played A Part Food & Rationing Exercise Objectives: 1. To understand and be aware that psychological defence is to be prepared for emergencies, e.g. during war-time 2. Survival in war-time is also about rationing the amount of basic food and water that is stored Singapore is our homeland; this is where we belong. Food & Rationing Exercise • Did you know what happen today in history 72 years ago? • The Battle of Singapore was fought in the Second World War when the Empire of Japan invaded the Allied stronghold of Singapore • Singapore was the major British military base and the fighting in Singapore lasted from 8–15 February 1942. We must preserve racial and religious harmony. Food & Rationing Exercise • During war-time and crisis, there is a worry that there will be shortages of food supplies so a system of rationing was introduced. • Rationing made sure that people got an equal amount of food every week. We must uphold meritocracy and incorruptibility. Food & Rationing Exercise • The government was worried that as food became more scarce, prices would rise and poorer people might not be able to afford to eat. • There was also a danger that some people might hoard food, leaving none for others. No one owes Singapore a living. Food & Rationing Exercise • In some countries, they learn to prepare and stock up during disasters such as hurricanes or in the event there is an epidemic. • Food security: To prevent spoilage, the supplies are rotated, with the food being eaten every six months, then restocked. We must ourselves defend Singapore. Food & Rationing Exercise Appreciate what we have. Do not waste food. We have confidence in our future.
