OBJECTIVES
Develop six organic forms
that are inspired by seed
pods.
Experiment with different
tools and techniques to
create unique forms and
textures.
Create a ceramic work that
functions as a rattle and
can be stacked on a
pole for display.
Use your thumbs to pinch
two bowl-like forms that
are similar in size called
pinch pots
Describe the methods that
you used to construct
your pods, as well as,
the tools that you used
and how they were used
to create various
textures.
5
CREATE TWO SIMILAR PINCH POTS
Roll out several balls of clay to put inside pod form to make the rattle sound.
6
SLIP AND SCORE THEM TOGETHER
Include Clay Balls (for rattle sound inside)
7
ALTER THE FORM OF THE OVAL SHAPE
Use different tools or add clay to the surface to create an
interesting texture inspired by pod forms.
8
CUT TWO HOLES ACROSS FROM EACH OTHER
THAT ARE LARGE ENOUGH TO BE DISPLAYED
ON A DOWEL ROD
Create 6 unique forms that vary in size and texture.
These holes will also allow air to get into the forms so that they do not blow up.
9
ONCE FIRED, EXPERIMENT WITH GLAZE APPLICATION.
Apply at least three coats of glaze.
Experiment with layering colors on
top of other colors.
10
CONSTRUCT A TOTEM STAND USING A DOWEL
ROD, BASE, AND WOOD GLUE.
Once all pods are glaze fired, place the pods in an interesting
order on the Totem Stand to display in the library.

Created unique, intricate
textures on each pod that
incorporated the use of a
large variety of hand
building techniques.
Experimented with clay and
tools to create elaborate
textures.
Pods are various sizes and
shapes.
Each pod is adorned with
different textures that are
interesting. Student used a
few different hand building
techniques to develop pod
designs. Experimented
somewhat with clay and
tools.
Most pods are different sizes
and shapes.
A few different textures have
been applied to the surface.
Textures that have been
incorporated are very simple.
Experimented a little with
tools. Needs to experiment
more.
Student applied three – five
layers of glaze. Glaze was
applied evenly. Each pod is
glazed uniquely. Student
experimented with layering
different colored glazes.
Student used different types
of glazes.
Uses the entire period to
work on artwork, puts forth
the best effort, follows all
directions, and shows
positive attitude.
Three-five layers of glaze
were applied. Some areas
may be a little uneven. Most
pods are glazed differently.
Some different types of
glazes were used.
A few layers of glaze were
applied many layers are
uneven. Some pods are glazed
differently. Many similar
colors were used.
Uses most of the class period
to work on artwork and puts
forth effort. Follows
directions and is typically on
task.
Uses some of the class period
to work on artwork, puts forth
some effort, follows directions
and has an ok attitude.
Does not use class time
effectively, no effort does not
follow directions needs to
work on attitude in class.
Project incomplete.

Placement of pods on totem
stand works well together.
Functionality Produces rattle sound.
Little thought was put into
the placement of pods on
the totem stand.
No sound produced.

A few pods vary in size and
shape.

Total
Textures are extremely simple
with little experimentation.
Surface design on all pods is
very similar. Some pods may
not be complete. Pod
exploded in the kiln because
of air bubbles or thickness of
clay. Project incomplete.
Pods are all very similar with
little variety. Project
incomplete.
More glaze needs to be
applied. Several areas exist
where glaze is not applied.
Few variations in color. Pod
exploded in the kiln because
of air bubbles or thickness of
clay. Project incomplete
