For example:
James Dashner, a well known author of children’s fantasy and
dystopian literature, reveals the element of dehumanization in the
The Maze Runner when Ben is banished into the maze by his
fellow gladers. Just before he is forced out into the maze, the
gladers parade him before the group and pronounce his sentence.
At this point, the narrator reveals that Newt’s pole had “a strange
attachment. A loop of rough leather, fastened to the metal with a
massive staple…it was a collar” (91). In a dehumanized society,
people lose the qualities that make them free such as respect for
life. Dashner points out the lack of respect for life when Ben is
treated like a captured animal being led to be slaughtered like the
slaves in the games of the Roman Coliseums.
