VIRTUALIZATION PRODUCTION LAB PROJECT OVERVIEW • The MoHealthWINs grant has allowed MCC to install a new state-of-the-art “Virtualization Production Lab” at our Business & Technology campus • Lab will be used in a variety of ways, and will enhance program curriculum • Virtual computing resources will be offered to MOHealthWINs participants across the state. • System is designed to support 250 simultaneous users SO WHAT IS VIRTUALIZATION? In computing, virtualization is the creation of a virtual (rather than actual) version of something, such as a hardware platform, operating system (OS), storage device, or network resources.[1] • In other words… separating logical resources from physical components. • Resource sharing • More efficient use of resources. Better utilization [1}Turban, E; King, D; Lee, J; Viehland, D (2008). "Chapter 19: Building E-Commerce Applications and Infrastructure". Electronic Commerce A Managerial Perspective. Run Multiple OSs from a MAC computer. • Reduce capital costs by increasing energy efficiency and requiring less hardware while increasing your server to admin ratio • Ensure your enterprise applications perform with the highest availability and performance • Build up business continuity through improved disaster recovery solutions and deliver high availability throughout the datacenter • Improve enterprise desktop management & control with faster deployment of desktops and fewer support calls due to application conflicts Source: http://www.vmware.com/virtualization/why-virtualize.html USE IN THE CLASSROOM L A U N C H V S P H E R E C L I E N T, L O G I N , A C C E S S V I R T U A L M A C H I N E S Explore New Technologies Virtualized Windows 8 Desktop Work with Client/Server applications Client Server Other Ways to Enhance Curriculum • Build robust troubleshooting scenarios • Students can build and break as much as they want in their virtual environment without worrying about the constraints of the local computer • Students can access the system outside of the classroom • Students and even Employers can use the system to train on a wide variety of technologies NEXT STEPS… • Brainstorm and strategize new ideas for using the lab • Beta testing will commence soon • Begin developing MOUs with consortium members • How you plan to use the lab • How usage will be tracked • Define expectations • Other unique components CONTACT INFORMATION MCC Virtualization Production Lab Brian Hurley Network Administrator MoHealthWINs 816.604.5249 brian.hurley@mcckc.edu MCC Business & Technology 1775 Universal Kansas City, MO 64120
