Defining The Conscience It has a literal meaning of common- knowledge. The Greek word for ‘conscience’ appears in the NT thirty one times. Secular View: The part of the superego that includes information about things that are viewed as bad by parents & society and these behaviors deemed bad lead to bad consequences, punishments and feelings of guilt and remorse. God Given Conscience The conscience is God given and it is given to all of humanity. Two Key Parts to the Conscience 1) The conscience is the selfawareness of morality. 2) The moral self-awareness of our conscience impacts our emotions and will. Two Main Actions of the Conscience 1) It Accuses Us 2) It Excuses Us Characteristics of the Conscience 1) The conscience speaks with a voice that is independent of ourselves. Characteristics of the Conscience 2) The conscience has eyes into the past, present and future. Characteristics of the Conscience 3) Other people can appeal to our conscience. Characteristics of the Conscience 4) God himself can appeal to our conscience – and he does! Characteristics of the Conscience 5) The conscience acts as a witness against us and for us. Two Points to Think About 1) We need to realize that our conscience is affected by everything we expose ourselves to. 2) We need to saturate our conscience in godliness and truth. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
