• Mute/Unmute (three finger double tap)
• Screen Curtain On/Off (three finger triple tap)
Teaching Strategies for VoiceOver:
Lets think about . . .
• What is the best way to hold each device?
• How do you teach the layout of the screen?
• What are the best strategies for mastering hand
gestures?
• Hand-Under-Hand
• Demonstrating on the person’s hand
How Braille Displays Work:
• VoiceOver and Braille work together:
• VoiceOver must be on for the braille display to work!
• If an app won’t work with VoiceOver, the braille display won’t work
either
• Braille chord commands are equivalent to hand gestures used with
VoiceOver
• Can mute VoiceOver and use only braille for navigation/reading
To pair a braille display, go to the Settings icon, then select General,
Accessibility, VoiceOver, and Braille. When you see your braille display under
Choose a Braille Device, select your device. Enter the code 1234 on your iOS
Device* (not the refreshable braille display) to complete the pairing process.
This only needs to be done the first time you use the braille display.
To view all refreshable braille displays that work with iOS devices go to:
http://www.apple.com/accessibility/iphone/braille-display.html
*Most displays use the code 1234
How Bluetooth Keyboards Work:
• Use ctrl and alt together to activate
VoiceOver commands:
• VoiceOver key commands are equivalent to hand gestures used
with VoiceOver
• Special functions keys act as “hot keys” to volume, music controls,
home, search, etc.
To pair a Bluetooth keyboard, go to the Settings icon, then select
General, and Bluetooth. Enter the PIN number on your iOS Device
(see keyboard instructions for PIN number) to complete the pairing
process. This only needs to be done the first time you use the
keyboard.
See http://axslab.com/articles/ios-voiceover-gestures-and-keyboardcommands.php for a list of commands.
Perspectives on Apps:
Blind:
• Apps are limited to those that work with VoiceOver
• VoiceOver take practice to master
• However, using a refreshable braille display opens
options for books available in braille and allows for braille
writing practice
• iPhone and iPad Touch are usually the best choices
Low Vision:
• Most apps work with Zoom or Pinch Zoom is built-in
• Zoom is easy to master
• iPad tends to be a good choice due to screen size
