Tackle Football is Dangerous By Dayjon Morales TACKLE FOOTBALL IS DANGEROUS Do you think tackle football is dangerous for kids? I think it is dangerous because kids get hurt all the time playing tackle football. In 2013 over 3.5 billion kids under the age of 14 got hurt playing football. Kids can get head injuries that can lead to a concussion. Dr. Larry Robbins said, “we should eliminate 18 and under football because it can lead to concussions.” Thousands of kids ages 7-18 report football injuries that lead to permanent brain damage. According to www.stopsportsinjury.org, almost a million kids under the age of 18 went into the hospital because they were playing football. Most of these injuries were concussions. These are some reasons why I think kids should not play tackle football until they are at least 18 years old. Two-hand Touch Football Two-hand touch football is different than tackle football because you touch the other player instead of tackling them. Two-hand touch football is fun and you cant get hurt. Two-hand touch is much safer than tackle football. Just read the facts! When you play two-hand touch football you may get a scrape, but listen to what tackle football could do to you. You could get overheated and that could lead to heat stroke. You could also get back pain and shoulder injuries. So when you play football please think about your safety. FOOTBALL This is a standard football used in all types of football games. Playing other sports is not as dangerous as football Kids should play basketball, soccer, or capture the flag instead of football because it is safer. These games can be dangerous, but it is less likely. For example if you’re going to play tackle football you can get a head injury but in basketball or soccer you may get a bruise and that's it. Basketball and other sports are also really good for your health. For example, in 2009 I was playing tackle football in a Pee Wee league and I came home and my neck was hurting after getting hit really hard by a teammate. His helmet hit my neck and I was in a lot of pain and I kept on complaining. After that I stopped playing tackle football. Now in 2013 I play basketball and it’s really fun. I barely ever get hurt. Basketball is safer than football Basketball is safer than football because if you touch another player in basketball the referee will call the foul and the game stops. In football you are supposed to hit other players to win the game. Soccer is safer than football Soccer is also safer than football because you also aren’t supposed to touch the other players. You are supposed to kick the ball to your teammates and eventually score a goal. You can also play capture the chicken Capture the chicken is the same as capture the flag except you use a chicken instead of a flag. In this game you barely get hurt because you’re not touching the opponent. The goal is to bring bag the chicken to your territory and that’s how you win the game. There is not a lot of physical contact. The only time you’re touching is if another player tags you. In an interview with Aden Gregory, a 5th grader at PS290 in New York City, he said, “Tackle is more fun, but I never played flag. I think tackle is more dangerous because you have physical contact.” He also said, “I think it is safe to play as a kid because you play with other kids a little older than you and a little longer.” I don’t agree with Aden because kids who are older than you could hurt you more than other younger kids. Tackle football is a dangerous sport and kids should not play until they are 18 years old because they can really get hurt. Certain injuries could end their sports life forever such as if they got paralyzed or brain damage. Before you sign up for tackle football, think about what you could be doing to your body.
