SWOT Analysis Session – Part 1
Group Instructions
Step One:
• Working individually, come up with as many items as you can that answer the questions in the 4 quadrants of the SWOT Diagram.
• Write them on cards; one item per card.
Step Two
• As a group, share your cards, and then agree to 3-5 per quadrant (more, if necessary, but fewer is better!)

• Write these on cards, one issue per card. Be legible and use a felt-tipped marker.
Step Three
• Return to Plenary, and stick your groups’ cards on to the large SWOT quadrant on the wall.
• Review the cards displayed and help to cluster them into common themes or areas.
• Internal:
– What are the STRENGTHS of the UNGEI Partnership (at all levels)?
– External:
– What are the OPPORTUNITIES for UNGEI in the current environment?
– Internal:
– What are WEAKNESSES in the UNGEI Partnership (at all levels)?
– External:
– What are the THREATS to UNGEI in the current environment?
SWOT Analysis session Part 2
• Return to your group.
Your Group will be allocated a number of the issues or themes emanating from the
SWOT Analysis for discussion.
In relation to each issue, discuss what action(s) UNGEI might take in relation to it (whether this be enhancing a strength, improving a weakness, availing of an opportunity or lessening the effect of a threat).
Be practical and realistic!
• For each issue prepare a simple sheet to display at the forthcoming Gallery:
Three columns: Issue/Action(s) for UNGEI/Comments (see handout).
One sheet per issue
• Group Rapporteurs are also asked to prepare electronic versions of these sheets
