Safer Internet Day History • Started as an initiative of EU SafeBorders project in 2004 • Adopted by Insafe in 2005 • Celebrated in more than 100 countries • Safer Internet Day 2014 will be the 11th annual celebration U.S. Involvement • iSafe had been the U.S. host • Some activities across the country but not a lot coordination or publicity in U.S. • November 2012 (then) DHS secretary Janet Napolitano and EC VP Neelie Kroes sign joint US-EU declaration ConnectSafely Involvement • Spring 2013 – Insafe’s Janice Richardson asks ConnectSafely.org to consider coordinating U.S. activities – requires support of “government agency” • Rep.
