Search within Specific Domains
• What are credible domains?
• Example: herb gardening site:.info
Search within a Particular Website
• Great for large website with lots of
content
• Example: Volkswagen site:
timesfreepress.com
Search for Exact Phrases
• Put terms in quotes
• Example: “Call me Ishmael”
Exclude off-topic results
• This is especially useful for synonyms like
Jaguar the car brand and jaguar the
animal.
• Example: jaguar speed -car
Search for Either Word
• Use OR to find pages that may have
just one of several words.
• Example: “Rock City” OR “Tennessee
Aquarium”
Search for Time-Based Results
• Limit your results to a date range.
• Example: Snowboarding Olympics
from last hour.
Search for Images Effectively
• Specify image type, image size, file
type, aspect ratio, etc.
• Example: Panoramic jpeg photo of
Olympic snowboarding
Search for Specific File Types
• Look for certain file types- .ppt, .pdf,
.exl
• Example: advanced google filetype:
ppt
Search for Trending Topics, Social Tags
• Google recognizes # and @
• Example: #sochiproblems
