The Digestive System Lesson5– Digestive System Model : • Students will gain a full understanding of how the digestive and excretory system work in their own bodies. • Students will be able to name the parts of the digestive system. • Students will be able to describe the path of food through the digestive system. • System will be able to assemble a model of the digestive system. What is the first part of the digestive system? What is the second part of the digestive system? What is the third part of the digestive system? What is the fourth part of the digestive system Describe to a partner how the all the parts work together to digest food. pancreas: an organ that creates bile to help in the digestive system liver: an organ that cleans the digestive system You will be making a model of the digestive system but, first you need to build your knowledge. Review your experiment recording sheet and what you’ve learned for that sheet. Model- mouth Digestion begins in the mouth where teeth chew food, breaking it into smaller and smaller pieces and where saliva, flowing out of salivary glands, softens and moistens chewed food. Direction: color and cut out the head models. Then glue the tabs together. Model- esophagus The tongue pushes small bits of food to the back of the mouth into the throat. throat muscles direct the food balls into the FOOD TUBE, or esophagus, where muscles keep it moving to the stomach. Direction: color and cut, then glue the parts together. Model- Stomach The muscular, elastic STOMACH mashes and churns the food. The stomach wall releases digestive juices that break down food. As the stomach churns, food turns into a thick paste called chyme. Direction: color and cut, then glue the parts together. Model- Small Intestine Chyme leaves the lower part and enters the SMALL INTESTINE. The wall of the small intestine gives off different digestive juices, but there’s are not enough. The gall bladder and LIVER make bile that flows through a duct help break down the food. the PANCREAS produces enzymes-rich juices that flow through the duct to further break down food. These are picked up by million of VILLI which absorb the nutrients into the blood. Direction: color and cut, then glue the parts together. Model-Large Intestine Parts of food the body cannot use are moved along by muscles in the small intestine wall into the LARGE INTESTINE wall. Most of the water and minerals left in the unusable food parts pass through the wall of the large intestine into the blood. The rest gets hard and is stored in the rectum until it is released from the anus. the opening at the end of the large intestine. Direction: color and cut, then glue the parts together. Use the model to identify the parts of the digestive system to a partner and how they are used. Then listen as they identify the digestive system and explain how they are used. Watch Meeeeeee!!
