What is a Goth • The Goth subculture is a contemporary subculture found in many countries and is popular mainly among young people. • Paul Hodkinson described Goths as being one of the clear cut sub cultures because the fulfil a number of requirement s: • A sense of identity as a Goth. • Daily life's are influenced by their commitment to the group. • They have a distinct style. • They produce their own shops, books, styles, fashion and music. • The Goth subculture began in England during the early 1980s in the gothic rock scene. The Goth subculture has survived much longer than others of the same era, and has continued to change. • Goth subculture is an obvious youth culture that is easy to distinguish from others in many ways. Goth Fashion • Gothic fashion is a clothing style that is typically dark, mysterious and exotic. • Both male and female Goths wear dark eyeliner and dark nail polish. • Goth styles are often borrowed from the Punk fashion, Victorians and Elizabethans. • Goth fashion is sometimes confused with heavy metal fashion and emo fashion. • Goths are often have many piercings. • Black hair, dark clothing and pale complexions provide the basic look of a Goth Continued… • The Goth subculture is considered to be a revolt against the slick fashions of the 1970s disco era and a protest against the colourful pastels and extravagance of the 1980s. • Goth fashion is sometimes used n mainstream and designer fashion. Alexander McQueen bought elements of Goth fashion to the runway and the style was named “Haute Goth”. Music • Goth rock music was defined as a separate movement from punk rock during the early 1980s largely due to the stylistic changes. • Gothic rock,combines dark, often keyboardheavy music with introspective and romantic lyrics
