Background Essay Vocabulary The Revolutionary War Army, authorized by the Continental Congress in 1775 and led by George Washington. Continental Army (of military personnel) to leave or run away from (service, duty, etc.) with the intention of never returning. Also known as scarlatina, scarlet fever features a bright red rash that covers most of the body. It was the site of the headquarters of the Continental Army under George Washington from December 1777 to June 1778 during the American Revolution. The encampment was subjected to severe winter weather that caused extensive illness and suffering. Valley Forge a member of the Religious Society of Friends, a Christian sect founded by George Fox about 1650, whose central belief is the doctrine of the Inner Light. Quakers reject sacraments, ritual, and formal ministry, hold meetings at which any member may speak, and have promoted many causes for social reform Quaker 1.
