Purposes of Small Group Instruction
Most importantly…
Small Group Instruction provides
DIFFERENTIATION!
YOUR SOLUTION FOR STUDENT SUCCESS
RIGHT REASON TECHNOLOGIES
Differentiation
Teachers proactively plan varied approaches
to
• what students need to learn
• how they will learn it
• how they will show what they have learned
in order to increase the likelihood that each
student will learn as much as he or she can, as
efficiently as possible.
YOUR SOLUTION FOR STUDENT SUCCESS

Step 1:
Develop a classroom plan which supports the
implementation of small group instruction.
• Establish routines in the classroom.
• Teach students the routine.
• Inform students of your expectations for them.
• Strategically arrange the classroom.
• Allocate time for small group instruction.
• Daily
• At least 30 minutes per session

Step 2:
Establish a purpose for the small group
instruction.

•
•
•
•
Pre-teaching
Re-teaching
Reinforcement
Additional practice
Enrichment
YOUR SOLUTION FOR STUDENT SUCCESS
RIGHT REASON TECHNOLOGIES
Pre-teaching
Small group instruction is beneficial to pre-teach a core
skill that will be introduced to the whole group/class.
This is helpful for students who:
•
•
•
•
Lack background knowledge
Require additional vocabulary
Will benefit from additional resources or models
Require additional instructional time

RIGHT REASON TECHNOLOGIES
Re-teaching
Small group instruction is beneficial to re-teach a core skill
that was not mastered by a small group of students.
This is helpful for students who:
•
•
•
•
Did not understand a part or multiple parts of a lesson that was taught to the whole
group/class
Will benefit from seeing a specific skill presented in a completely different way
Were not able to accurately complete the independent practice within the lesson
Require additional instructional time
YOUR SOLUTION FOR STUDENT SUCCESS
RIGHT REASON TECHNOLOGIES
Reinforcement
Small group instruction is beneficial to reinforce a core
skill that was taught to the whole group/class.
This is helpful for students who:
• Will benefit from additional resources or models
• Require additional instructional time
• Require additional examples for extended practice
YOUR SOLUTION FOR STUDENT SUCCESS
RIGHT REASON TECHNOLOGIES
Additional Practice
Small group instruction is beneficial to provide additional
practice for a core skill that was introduced to the
whole group/class.
This is helpful for students who:
• Require more time to practice the skill
• Require additional guided practice
• Will benefit from seeing practice tasks in different ways
YOUR SOLUTION FOR STUDENT SUCCESS
RIGHT REASON TECHNOLOGIES
Enrichment
Small group instruction is beneficial to provide enrichment for
students who have demonstrated mastery of a core skill that
was taught to the whole group/class.
This is helpful for students who:
• Have mastered the skill that was introduced
• Are prepared to apply the skill at higher levels of thinking
