Counter Claims
Counter Claim: One of the most
important parts of an argument is knowing
the arguments against your position and
acknowledging them.
.
It shows that you have thought about both
sides.

How Do We Develop Counter
Claims?
 We
look at both sides equally
 We
collect evidence and create claims for
both sides
 We
look at the claims and ask “What are
the reasons to agree and disagree
with each claim?”
Position
The American Dream is not attainable.
Claim #1:
Obstacles can get in the way.
 What are the reasons to agree with
the claim?
I have textual evidence to support
this claim with the character of
Lennie in Of Mice and Men.
Counter Claim
The American Dream is attainable.
Counter Claim #1:
If you work hard you can achieve and
overcome the obstacles.
 What are the reasons to agree with the
claim?
I have textual evidence to
support this with Junior in ATD
when he leaves the Rez to go to Reardan.
 What are the reasons to disagree with
the claim?
Junior doesn’t actually achieve breaking away
from poverty through education in the book.
He simply goes to school, gets good grades and
meets new friends.
The text does not show him getting off the Rez
or breaking the cycle of poverty.

Analysis
Many people argue that the American Dream is in
fact attainable. Those who argue this often use the
character of Junior in The Absolutely True Diary of a
Part Time Indian as evidence. They point to page 67
when the author shows Rowdy leaving the
Reservation for an all white school in order to
achieve his dream. The author writes on page 67 that
Junior is finally “going to a place that was completely
opposite of the Rez.” Though it is true that this
evidence shows that character of Junior is able to
work hard and get an education the evidence does
not show that Junior is attaining the American
Dream. In the text, the character of Junior does not
leave the a life of poverty or create a new life for his
family. He is simply shown as going to a better school
and making new friends. On page 72 he says, “I was
poor, I was really poor.” This clearly shows that the
character of Junior is not achieving the American
Dream he is simply seeing wealth and success from a
closer view.
