Audition
Sunday mornings at our house
are full of music.
Grandmomma is singing.
She says she's auditioning
for the heavenly choir.
The music of her voice
Sets us up and dressed,
gets us fed
and out the door.
Grandmomma is singing.
Her voice as rich as cream,
sure as tomorrow.
I close my eyes and try
not to let her see how her song
moves me.
Let her keep practicing.
She is music,
and I never want her song
to end.

Merry-Go-Round
Where is the Jim Crow section
On this merry-go-round,
Mister, cause I want to ride?
Down South where I come from
White and colored
Can't sit side by side.
Down South on the train
There's a Jim Crow car.
On the bus we're put in the back—
But there ain't no back
To a merry-go-round!
Where's the horse
For a kid that's black?
Think: What does Hughes mean that “there ain’t no
back to a merry-go-round”?

fluency practice within a poetry unit in literature
class. In my literature class, we practiced one
aspect of fluency based on the rows of our
fluency rubric per class, and at the end of the
unit, each student performed one poem that
they chose from our Poetry Bundle.
