What is Junior Great Books?
A
program designed around engaging
literature that focuses on extending
student thinking
 Students are encouraged to form and
respond to interpretive questions
 The instruction for each text culminates
with a Shared Inquiry Discussion
JGB: What is Shared Inquiry?
 After
multiple readings of the text and a
variety of instructional activities, students
come together to explore the meaning of
the piece of literature.
 They share their insights (rooted in textual
evidence) and respond to each others’
ideas.
What is Daily 5?
A
structure that helps students develop
reading, writing, and vocabulary
independently.
 Focuses on choices and student direction.
 Enables the teacher to work effectively
with small groups while other students
work on meaningful tasks.
How do JGB and Daily 5 fit
together?
 Both
of these instructional designs
encourage student independence and
student “choice.”
 JGB teacher editions include aspects
which fit with Daily 5:
 Vocabulary instruction (Word Work)
 Writing extensions (Work on Writing)
 Directed Notes (Read to Someone or Self)
How to Start JGB
 Find
the resources your school may have!
 Many schools have JGB sets and teacher
editions from the early 1990s.
 The AIG department purchased new
editions last year which can be checked
out from ADR.
 Ask someone who went to last year’s
training!
