Choosing a suitable Individual Investigation title is a very important step and it is worth taking time to consider it carefully. The title can be based on: • • • • a topic arising from one of your subject options the Welsh Baccalaureate Core, personal interest. An Options subject e.g. A Level or Principal Learning qualification • From your personal tutor or supervisor • Someone who can help you with the topic you have chosen e.g. if your topic was about pressure groups you could get advice from a politics teacher. •Choose a title and topic you are interested in and already know something about. It is useful to have some knowledge about the topic before you begin. Use a clear and challenging title which encourages you not to just describe the topic. At this level you must investigate the factors, reasons and explanations behind topics/issues. Choose a topic and title you know you will be able to find enough information about. Be confident you will be able to find enough good sources of information. Be confident you will be able to find reliable and detailed sources of information. Rather than just have a general title like ‘Sustainable development’, it is a good idea to make your title a key question or hypothesis. Using a question or hypothesis helps to give your work a clear focus and direction Encourages you to reach final/overall judgements and draw conclusions Remember Individual Investigations must be about Wales and another country or region. What are the governments in Wales and Scotland doing to tackle apathy among young voters? How popular and effective are alternate forms of energy (e.g. wind farms) in Wales and Wyoming, USA? To what extent is teen pregnancy a problem in Wales and Holland and how successfully are these countries tackling the issue? What are the policies and attitudes towards an issue (e.g. immunisation, day care, gun crime, promotion of sport, drug laws) in Wales and Sweden? What are the main differences in the education systems of Wales and Japan? What are the attitudes of young people towards capital punishment in Wales and Florida, USA? Travel and Tourism How can tourism be effectively promoted in small countries, with special reference to Wales and Latvia? Politics What are the main features of the electoral systems in Wales and Australia? Is there a demand for change? ICT/Computing Compare the content, house style and effectiveness of the websites of the Scottish Parliament and National Assembly for Wales. Geography What are the key factors in urban regeneration, with special reference to the revitalisation of Cardiff Bay and the ‘Big Dig’ in Boston? Business Studies What factors influence employment trends in regions, with special reference to Wales within the UK and Galicia within Spain? You can base your title on opinions What are the attitudes of people in Wales and the USA towards the war in Afghanistan? •Consider survey questions carefully e.g. your peers may not know enough about the laws or policies in another country to give an effective answer. • Have I had advice about my choice of title? • Is the title appropriate for the Advanced level? • Is there a clear focus e.g. based on a key question or hypothesis • Does my title cover Wales and another country or region? • Am I likely to be able to find the sources and information required?
