Saigon International College ELECTIVE CHOICES Information Session – October 2014 NEW AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM STARTS IN 2015 The new Australian Curriculum commences in 2015 for all Year 11 students. By 2016 the Australian Curriculum will be used by all States in Australia – including Western Australia. By 2016 every student will graduate at the end of Year 12 with a Western Australian Statement of Student Achievement – WASSA. Students who choose to study ATAR Courses will achieve a WACE in addition to receiving a WASSA. NEW AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM STARTS IN 2015 INTERNATIONAL STREAM – General Courses Graduate with a WASSA - Western Australian Statement of Student Achievement Certificate AUSTRALIAN STREAM - ATAR Courses Graduate with a WACE - Western Australian Certificate of Education - Receive an ATAR score for Australian university entrance. AUSTRALIAN STREAM - ATAR Courses ATAR courses: basically like Stage 3 courses; sit SIC exams at end of each semester; all students must then sit for the WACE exam at the end of Year MIXED STREAM - Courses Some students may wish to choose a mix of both General courses and ATAR courses (graduate with a WASSA certificate) YOUR STEAMS OF STUDY - 2015 INTERNATIONAL STREAM For students who will go to university internationally such as in Canada, USA, Europe, UK or in Vietnam. AUSTRALIAN STREAM For students who will go to university in Australia or Vietnam. MIXED STREAM - Courses For students who will go to university internationally such as in Canada, USA, Europe, UK or in Vietnam. SIC COURSES 2015 Core Courses: EALD – English as an Additional Language & Dialect Mathematics ESL – English Vietnamese Studies Elective Courses: 3 Elective Courses SIC COURSES – YEAR 11 Elective Courses: While students only need 3 electives on the Form You must write down 4 choices. Why? In some cases, due to your combination of choices, it may not be possible to do an elective. Or too many students wish to do the same elective or not enough students are interested in a course. SIC COURSES – YEAR 11 Elective Courses: Students must choose 4 Elective Courses! Show your order of preferences by placing a number in the boxes: EALD BME ECONS 1 ACF 3 AIT 2 COMP 4 CHEM HBS PSY SIC COURSES – YEAR 12 What Courses – What Career: Medicine; Engineering; Science Degrees Prerequisite courses – usually: Mathematics; Physics and Chemistry. Business/Commerce – Mathematics SIC COURSES – YEAR 12 What Courses to Choose: Courses that I like to study Courses in which I know I will do well Courses that will assist my university entrance DO NOT CHOOSE A COURSE JUST BECAUSE YOUR BEST FRIEND IS DOING IT! SIC COURSES Courses for University Check the University Website: open the Faculty such as medicine, engineering, computing. What are the entrance requirements? Are there any prerequisites such as must have studied Physics or Chemistry? INTERNATIONAL STREAM - WASSA Extra things to remember about doing a WASSA: Courses are easier than the Australian Stream ATAR program – so easier to get higher grades. There is no big WACE exam at the end of Year 12 Every student will receive a WASSA certificate at the end of Year 12 Once you have the WASSA you can still go to university in Australia – BUT you must first do a 6 to 8 month Foundation Program to qualify for entrance.
