Missouri Writing Projects Network
Making & Technical Writing Conferences:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjHYZztiToY
•
Two-day Missouri Writing Projects Network/DESE co-sponsored statewide
conference along with shorter, local follow-up conferences held regionally
at each university site
Cross-Content Literacy Institutes:
•
Nine-day workshop during the winter semester geared toward improving
students’ informational reading and technical/argumentative writing
habits in various content areas as required by the CCSS
Video Series: https://vimeo.com/44035604
•
Series of videotaped lessons contributed by WP Teacher Consultants
showcasing effective literacy practices and lessons relevant across content
areas
NWP Core Beliefs:
 Joins teachers in grades pre-K-16
 Focuses on teaching and learning, not
assigning and grading
 Blends theory, research, practice
 Advocates no single, right approach but
rather relies on experience and best practices
Literacy in CTE Project - MRI
Missouri Reading Initiative


Focuses on assisting teachers of all content areas
strategies to support students’ literacy
performance
Recognizes that CTE teachers are not Reading
and Writing teachers. However CTE teachers can
intentionally support their content as they assist
students with literacy challenges
Literacy in CTE Project - MRI
Missouri Reading Initiative
How does it work?
 Two year, on-site, comprehensive training
 Year one: focus is Reading Year two: focus is Writing
 Work with both comprehensive high schools and their
CTE centers
 Given modeled strategies of Before, During, and After
reading/writing strategies
 Application of each strategy is to be connected to each
content and CTE area
Literacy in CTE Project - MRI
Missouri Reading Initiative


Collaboration is done with participants sharing
how they have used specific literacy support
strategies
Next year, coaching will follow training with MRI
trainer providing feedback to participants
Literacy in CTE - MRI
Missouri Reading Initiative



In 2011-2012, focused on 4 high schools and 4
CTE centers reaching 156 teachers
In 2012-2013 will focus on 6 high schools and 6
centers reaching up to 225 teachers
Future plans…expand to more CTE centers and
high schools

What Are Some Positive Outcomes For You
and Your Students As A Result of MRI?
A wealth of ideas about what to do before we
teach something
Good ideas for every content (vocabulary and preassessment)
As a result of MRI, I now have exciting new
strategies to help increase vocabulary knowledge
I liked how applicable the techniques we learned
were
I liked how sessions were tailored for each area.

“The MRI training has given us great new tools to
improve the delivery and assessment of the
materials presented in our coursework. It has
been amazing to see how these strategies have
improved student comprehension and retention. “
