Illinois State Board of Education PARCC in Illinois Presented by: Dan Frederking Principal Consultant Illinois State Board of Education dfrederk@isbe.net • Assesses Math and ELA • Grades 3-8 • English III and Algebra II/Integrated Math 3 • Will eventually be completely computer-based but paper version will be available for several more years. 2 I-TRAx • Using the I-TRAx data as well as other information, Student Assessment staff in consultation with technology staff will make recommendations about each school’s capacity to deliver online assessment. Schools and districts will then be informed of their recommended capacity. • Schools who have a limited capacity to test online may select which grades will be assessed online. The default practice will be to assess the highest grades online first. • Schools/districts may request a review of the recommendations and submit a formal appeal if they feel the recommendation is unreasonable. • http://www.isbe.state.il.us/assessment/pdfs/2015/determi 3 ne-online-asmt-readiness.pdf Balanced Assessment System A balanced assessment system is the strategic use of formative, interim, and summative measures of student performance to address immediate student needs, inform ongoing instructional changes, and guide long-term educational improvement. https://sites.google.com/a/dcsdk12.org/bas 4 Balanced Assessment System Measuring Student Growth: A Collaborative Process • • • Summative End of Course/Year Assessments Performance-Based Assessments Portfolios • • • Mid-Year Assessments Unit/Chapter Assessments Performance-Based Assessments Interim • • • Performance-Based Assessments Self/Peer Assessments Discussion/Observation/Checklists Formative Frequency of Administration Adapted from Perie, Marion, & Gong (2009) 5 Design of the Assessment System Claims for ELA/Literacy ELA/Literacy for Grades 3–11 Master Claim Major Claim: Reading Complex Text SC: Vocabulary Interpretation and Use SC: Reading Literature SC: Reading Informational Text Major Claim: Writing SC: Written Expression SC: Research SC: Conventions and Knowledge of Language Claims for Mathematics Master Claim: Students are on-track or ready for college and careers Sub-claim A: Students solve problems involving the major content for their grade level with connections to practices Sub-Claim B: Students solve problems involving the additional and supporting content for their grade level with connections to practices Sub-claim C: Students express mathematical reasoning by constructing mathematical arguments and critiques Sub-Claim D: Students solve real world problems engaging particularly in the modeling practice PARCC EvidenceCentered Design Standards Claims Evidence Tasks Blueprints, Test Specs, PLDs • http://www.parcconline.org/assessmentsystem Content contained is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License PARCC Accessibility System * For students with disabilities, English learners, and English learners with disabilities Accessibility Features for All Students • Answer Masking • Audio Amplification • Background/Font Color (Color Contrast) • Eliminate Answer Choices • Flag Items for Review • General Masking • Highlight Tool • Headphones or Noise Buffers • Line Reader Tool • Magnification/Enlarge ment Device • NotePad • Pop-up Glossary • Text-to-Speech for the Mathematics Assessments • Writing Tools Accommodations • Presentation accommodations – Assistive technology – Closed captioning of multimedia – Text to speech on ELA/literacy items • Response accommodations – Braille note taker – Speech to text – Calculation device (outside the tools provided in technology platform) • Timing and setting accommodations Sample Questions and Tutorial http://www.parcconline.org/computer-basedsamples Content contained is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License Next Year School/District START DATE Spring Regular Administration of Computer-Based Testing *Paper/Pencil administration should occur during the first two weeks of each designated testing window On or before Sept. 1 After Sept. 1 March 9, 2015 to April 3, 2015 PBA On or before Sept. 1 After Sept. 1 March 16, 2015 to April 10, 2015 April 27, 2015 to May 22, 2015 EOY May 4, 2015 to May 29, 2015 Content contained is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License 3 • PARCC website Resources – http://www.parcconline.org/ • ISBE PARCC website – http://www.isbe.state.il.us/assessment/parcc.htm • ISBE New Standards website – http://www.isbe.state.il.us/common_core/pls/default.htm • Technology Specifications – http://www.parcconline.org/technology Contacts • Dan Frederking – dfrederk@isbe.net • ISBE Assessment – www.isbe.net/assessment – assessment@isbe.net – 866-317-6034 18
