Cognitive Ability Tests Y7 September 2013 CATS 4 These tests focus on each individual student’s style of learning. Taking these tests on entry to the school allows us to assess the student’s learning and to place them appropriately in sets for some subjects. They allow us to identify ‘gifted’ students – We now able to identify those with high levels of spatial as well as verbal and numerical ability. CATs tests are part of a national framework which correlates with curriculum Key Stages. 3 out of the 4 parts of CATs4 are not dependent on language so students with any level of English can be assessed. CATs are for students with a reading age from age 7 years 6 months to 17 years 11 months and the same test format is used throughout. The results support all aspects of teaching and learning and are used as a reference point for teachers when planning and setting targets. CAT 4 STRUCTURE There are now 4 parts to the test.
