97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
“Now to a superstar of Italian enology: The 2010 Flaccianello della Pieve will take your breath away. This is a seriously beautiful Sangiovese-based wine with the kind of intensity and aromatic purity you only experience every 1,000 wines or so. There’s a lot to say here. First, the wine’s beautiful appearance shows dark garnet colors with highlights of ruby and purple gemstone. The bouquet delivers a steady and seductive evolution with dark cherry, chocolate, spice, tobacco and sweet almond all seamlessly balanced one against the other. Its texture and inner fabric is rich, velvety and firm. There’s a brilliant spot of acidity that hits you at the back of the mouth and helps the wine from feeling too heavy or dense. In fact, outstanding elegance is what ultimately sets it apart. The temptation to drink it now is huge, but those still young tannins definitely need a few more years to unwind. (97+) Fontodi’s Giovanni Manetti has released one of the top Italian wines of 2010. His Flaccianello della Pieve (assembled from the best parcels of Sangiovese) is an expression of profound beauty and elegance. I tasted this wine early in my work for this issue and found myself returning to my note over and over again, comparing the other great wines of 2010 to Flaccianello. It became my benchmark for the vintage.” RP
93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
“The garnet-ruby 2010 Barbaresco opens with beautifully etched aromas of flint, red berry, cassis, licorice and dried mint. The wine is tight and elegant on the finish but imparts noteworthy complexity as it warms and evolves in the glass. There’s a crisp brightness to the mouthfeel that is enhanced by the wine’s bright acidity and its young tannins.” RP
Until recently the vineyards of Cascina Bruciata (“house on fire”) produced fruit that was purchased by Gaja and the Giacosa brothers of Neive among others. Marino Balbo (father) would have continued on this path were it not for the wish of his son Carlo who wanted to bottle a family wine instead. In 2000, Carlo established the brand Cascina Bruciata. He owns
7.5 hectares including three in the celebrated Rio Sordo cru. He will be releasing his first
Barbera d’Alba later this year. This relative newcomer is full of delightful surprises.
Winemaker Francesco Baravalle has done a terrific job.
92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
“The 2005 Bolgheri Superiore I Castagni (70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Syrah, 10%
Teroldego) is decidedly fresher and more vibrant than the Piastraia. This full-bodied, intense wine jumps from the glass with super-ripe aromas that lead to blueberry jam, cassis, grilled herbs, blackberries, minerals, graphite and French oak. The Castagni possesses gorgeous inner sweetness and firm yet well-integrated tannins, both of which contribute to the wine’s exceptional balance. This is a wonderful effort from Satta.” RP
92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
“The 2006 Nambrot is the richest and darkest of these offerings from Ghizzano. A plush, concentrated wine, the Nambrot reveals a dense, extroverted expression of black cherries, grilled herbs, leather and earthiness. Here too, the wine comes across as rather young and in need of bottle age, but its future appears quite promising” RP

92 points Robert Parker`s Wine Advocate
“The 2009 Maremma Toscana Podere San Cristoforo is 100% Petit Verdot that spent 10 months in French oak. It is a racy, sleek wine that impresses for its elegant texture and richness rather than for its varietal character, of which there is relatively little. Dark red fruit, spices, minerals and cassis wrap around the super-ripe, expressive finish. Taken on its own terms, this is a very pretty wine.” RP
92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
“I find the estate’s 2008 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Colline Teramane Riserva Zanna even more compelling than the Zanna, although it is less expensive. Firm yet well-integrated tannins give the wine much of its backbone and verve. Here the fruit is ripe, but not as sweet or opulent. Juicy black cherries, flowers, mint and licorice flow through to the vibrant, utterly impeccable finish. This is a fabulous showing from Illuminati. Anticipated maturity:
2013-2018.
Illuminati excels with a style that places considerable emphasis on textural richness and intensity. When they are on, the Illuminati wines are exciting and full of personality.” RP
92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
“The 2010 Chianti Classico is a stunning wine that epitomizes the Conca d’Oro amphitheater of vines that distinguishes Panzano in Chianti. The wine shows seamless integration with bright fruit pitted against warmer tones of leather and tobacco. It’s like a perfectly balanced scale with rich intensity on one side and elegant fruit on the other.” RP
90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
“The 2004 Guidaccio has acquired lovely complexity in bottle. Scents of tobacco, licorice and grilled herbs lead to juicy cherries as this soft, forward red opens up in the glass. Floral notes add freshness on the high-toned finish. Once again, in 2004 Guidaccio is very representative of the qualities of the vintage in the way it emphasizes elegance and finesse over heft.” RP
90 points Wine Speactator
“The mouthfilling flavors of dried cherry, currant and ripe pear are flanked by concentrated notes of allspice and dark chocolate.” WS
90 points Robert Parker`s Wine Advocate
“The 2011 Sangiovese Amaranto bursts from the glass with sweet red cherries, raspberries and flowers. As always, the Amaranto is made in a juicy, fruity style best suited for drinking over the next few years. It remains one of the prettiest and most fairly priced wines in its price range. This is simply a joyous glass of wine and a great value to boot.” RP
