AMSTERDAM MARKETING
Amsterdam Marketing is the city marketing organisation of the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area, active in the fields of promotion,
information, research and services. Our ambition is to put this region on the map as one of the five most attractive metropolitan
areas in Europe for its residents, visitors, businesses and influential groups. Under the motto ‘I amsterdam’, we present the
region as a dynamic place to live and work, an attractive travel destination and a test market for innovation. We strongly believe
that we are more than the sum of our parts. For you, the advertiser, this creates an unprecedented network of communication
resources to reach different target audiences – nationally and internationally – as effectively as possible.
Target audiences
Our advertising opportunities are substantial and diverse. To present them as clearly as possible, we have clustered the
various means by target audience: residents, visitors from the Netherlands, international visitors and business-to-business. As
an example, many cultural institutions specifically target the local residents and visitors from within the Netherlands, such as
with the Uitkrant or its associated cultural website. Larger institutions and museums can also reach out to international visitors
through the new English-language city magazine A-mag. Businesses working in the tourism sector can also easily reach their
target audience via the substantial iamsterdam.com website or, for instance, by narrowcasting to designated visitor profiles
in the city’s tourist offices and ticket shops. Additionally, to communicate to the right organisations in the travel industry and
conference market there are specific newsletters available.
Consultancy
We are delighted to present all of the advertising opportunities that our new city marketing organisation has to offer within this
brochure. We hope you will take inspiration from these materials and contact our staff about the requirements of your publicity
campaigns. They will gladly guide you through the use of our promotional tools and can also work with your specifications to
create a custom solution that fits your company perfectly.

FLOWER
POWER

Stadsschouwburg, 1 t/m 4 januari
OUWE PINDA’S
Pinda is een scheldwoord
voor Indonesiër. Drie
‘ouwe pinda’s’ maken
een voorstelling over hun
families die in de jaren
vijftig van Indonesië naar
het regenachtige Nederland kwamen. Bodil de la
Parra & Nadja Hüpscher
gaan aan de hand van
kleurrijke familieverhalen
en tropische herinneringen
op zoek naar hun Indische
wortels. Eddie B. Wahr is
de derde pinda. Hij maakt
heimweemuziek van flarden gamelan en Chinese
Peking opera.

DE DONKERE KAMER VAN
DAMOKLES
Heeft Dorbeck echt bestaan
of heeft Osewoudt hem
verzonnen?

acteurs.
Regie: Jaap Spijkers. Met: Mark Rietman, Daan Schuurmans, Bracha van Doesburgh,
Tijn Doctor, Paul Hoes e.a.

herinneren. Wat is de waarheid en hoe
betrouwbaar is ons geheugen? Wat weten we eigenlijk van onszelf? Deze bitterzoete komedie is de eerste productie
van DeLaMar Producties en exclusief in
dit theater te zien.
Regie: Antoine Uitdehaag. Met: Tjitske

Wie Othello zegt, zegt Jago. En wie
Jago kent, weet welke kracht jaloezie
(reprise)

Roeland Fernhout, Fred Goessens, Janni

SPROOK

Vroeger was alles anders, alles beter….
iedereen zeurt. Het is hoog tijd voor
cultuuroptimisme; hoop is namelijk het
enige wat we nog hebben. Waar hoop is,
is vuur. En zonder vuur geen warmte,
zonder warmte geen liefde en zonder
liefde geen mens. Zonder hoop geen
leven en zonder leven geen dood. Vincent Bijlo verschaft als cultuuroptimist
prozac voor het oor, lichttherapie voor
het oog en geeft vooral een weldadige
hersenmassage.

Murth Mossel werd bekend als vj bij
TMF, maar het aan elkaar praten van
clips ging ook vervelen. Bovendien had
Nederland.

huwelijk sluiten. In de nacht voor
het huwelijk vechten hun alter ego’s
Oberon en Titiana hun eigen strijd uit.
Vier jonge geliefden kruisen hun pad.

Canal Belt village
‘U
trechtsebuurt’ is the unofficial moniker used by
many local residents and
business owners for a charming
slice of the Canal Belt flanked by the
Amstel River and the Reguliersgracht, situated between the Rembrandt- and Frederiks squares.
QUALITY STREET
Utrechtsestraat, which runs
through the area, offers a varied selection of shops, including boutiques, bookstores and designer furniture and homeware stores, with
beautiful views of the Canal Ring.
André Sprangers, a resident for 52
years and owner of high-end shoe
shop Zwartjes van 1883 (number
123 ) says, ‘The Utrechtsestraat is
about selling quality in a quality environment. With plenty of independent businesses, the emphasis is
on pleasing local shoppers.’
The street’s popularity has recently
attracted some chains, too, including local lifestyle store Sissy-Boy
(numbers 81-83 ), sustainable supermarket Marqt (number 17 )
and international fashion brands
such as American Apparel (number
85 ) and Marc by Marc Jacobs
(number 120 ).
‘Customers are often served by the
owner of the store, which makes it
feel like a village street within a big
city,’ Sprangers continues. ‘Many
storeowners live above their shops,
which is why the Utrechtsestraat remains a lively and safe street even
after closing time. We take care of
our street – and that shows.’
Things weren’t always this rosy in
Utrechtsestraat, named for the former Utrechtsepoort city gate. While
the street has been a bustling shopping destination since its creation in
1658, prostitution and drugs were a
major problem on the 600-metre
street as recently as 1985.
EXTREME MAKEOVER

THE REDISCOVERY OF
THE WORLD
In a crowd-sourced, imagedominated age where
everybody with a smartphone
is a photographer, what artistic
value does the medium hold?
Young Dutch photographers
address this question with
works directed at the very
nature of photography itself,
rediscovering the world as they
do so. This inaugural exhibition
at the newly expanded Huis

features new works by, among
others, Hellen van Meene and

The year 2013 is a very special year for Amsterdam. In celebration of several incredible
milestones such as the opening of the renovated Rijksmuseum, 40 years of the Van Gogh
Museum, the 125th anniversary of The Concertgebouw and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra,
175 years Artis Royal Zoo and 400 years of the Canal Ring, the year is chock-full of exciting
events and exhibitions. As a city renowned for its creativity and innovations, 2013 is THE year
we share this spirit with the world. No wonder that Lonely Planet named Amsterdam as one of
the best cities to visit in 2013, and CNN proclaimed Amsterdam as one of the 10 hottest
destinations for this year: a “must-visit”!

Creative success
Amsterdam advertising agencies continue to flourish in 2013
Korean advertising agency Cheil Worldwide recently established
an office in Amsterdam, where it will produce international
campaigns for Samsung, among other clients. Cheil joins a group
of industry-leading agencies already established here, such as
Anomaly, Arnold, Perfect Fools, StrawberryFrog and Amsterdam
Worldwide. Catalysed by a renowned pool of creative talent,
proximity to clients and the city’s cosmopolitan atmosphere,
Amsterdam’s creative sector is flourishing.
This positive business experience is reflected in the success that
Amsterdam-based advertising agencies enjoyed at the 2013
Cannes Lions awards, with agencies based in the area bringing
home 19 trophies. Ogilvy & Mather Amsterdam received a
Silver Lion for their work with financial cooperative DELA, while
Wieden+Kennedy took the Grand Prix for their work for another
Amsterdam icon: Heineken.

Amsterdam at the forefront of chip development
Multinational ASML, the Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM), the University of Amsterdam (UvA), the VU University Amsterdam and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO)
have joined efforts to set up an Institute for Nanolithography at the
Science Park in Amsterdam. The institute will open in the third quarter
of 2013. ‘We are honoured that ASML acknowledges the position of
Amsterdam as a city of commerce, culture and science,’ said Carolien
Gehrels, Deputy Mayor of Amsterdam. Nanolithography is a branch of
nanotechnology concerned with the study and application of fabricating
nanometre-scale structures. The institute is expected to make important
contributions to semiconductor lithography, which is the key manufacturing technology for making the memory chips and processors in PCs,
smartphones and tablets.

Publicis Omnicom Group to be
based on ‘neutral territory’
An advertising giant is born
The merger of US-based company Omnicom and the French advertising firm Publicis is expected to go into effect by the fourth quarter of 2013 with the approval of shareholders. The combining will
create the biggest advertising organisation in the world and will be
headquartered in Amsterdam. The official reason for locating the
group’s headquarters in Amsterdam is because the city is considered ‘neutral territory’. This underpins the notion that the Dutch
have a relatively neutral political position, allowing Amsterdambased agencies to easily work with international clients.

2013 with ten new technology start-ups taking

On the Oudezijds Voorburgwal in

looks like a typical 17th-century

building is now a museum where

The added value of research for your organisation
What does a visitor want? How can I attract the right visitors? These are questions the research department has the answers to or is
presently searching for. This department within Amsterdam Marketing is proactively engaged in research, development and market
information. And thus, the department has ‘big data’ at its disposal due to the extensive collection of details about domestic and foreign
visitors in Amsterdam, the surrounding Metropolitan Area and Noord-Holland. They also know their way around various knowledge
networks, using these to trace relevant information for the organisation, businesses and cultural institutions.
Online knowledge
Much information is available online through www.amsterdammarketing.org. This is where you can consult the Tourism Barometer and see
the key monthly figures for the city: attractions, museums, incoming international flights, accommodation, etc. The Tourism Barometer is
also available for 7 other destinations. Organisations or ventures that are partners of Amsterdam Marketing can log in and make all kinds
of comparisons, such as comparing your sector performance with those in the same or an otherwise related industry, or even in a different
(foreign) city and/or region that’s included in the Tourism Barometer. There are also several fact sheets and research reports available for
download.
Specific questions
The research department can answer more specific questions and perform analyses by request. Much valuable visitor information is
traceable by requesting a printout and/or analysis for specific questions relating to your own company or organisation. For more extensive
advice, for example, for visitor development, feasibility, mobility of visitors and positioning questions, you can also contact the research
department advisors. Some examples of recently released specific research and assignments include: Amsterdam Visitors Profile 2012,
Meetings & Conferences Key Figures Analysis, municipalities of Noord-Holland Visitors Report, analysis of public transport use amongst
international visitors, tourism barometers for specific destinations, quantification and forecasting scenarios regarding visitors in order to
create effective policy relating to the construction of hotels, etc.
Projects
Project coordinators are present within the department who can give shape and form to larger, more complex development and
implementation processes. Examples are the projects ‘Visit Amsterdam, See Holland’ in 30 municipalities and two provinces in the
Amsterdam Metropolitan Area; the design and development of the MICE Meets Metropolis project in six municipalities and the area
around Amsterdam-Utrecht; or a design for European quality criteria regarding hospitality in European cities, in anticipation of the new
European guidelines and quality labels.
