The Bicentenary Year
I 2011 var det 200 år siden Bragernes og Strømsø slo seg sammen og ble til Drammen
by. Dette ble behørig feiret gjennom en rekke storslåtte arrangementer. Kongen og
dronningen deltok også.
The year 2011 marks the 200th Anniversary of Bragernes and Strømsø being merged
to form the town of Drammen. This was duly celebrated with a number of magnificent
arrangements, some attended by the King and Queen of Norway.
Nyttårsaftenen markerte inngangen til jubileumsåret og starten
på en storstilt feiring. Allerede før midnatt startet feiringen, med
klokke­spill fra Bragernes kirke, tale av ordfører Tore Opdal Hansen
og et show på torgscenen med dans, sang og musikk som førte
publikum med på en reise tilbake i historien og inn i fremtiden. Nøyaktig klokk­a 24 ble jubileumsåret ønsket velkommen gjennom et
praktfullt fyrverkeri, det flotteste i Drammens historie.
Deretter gikk det slag i slag med offisielle og uoffisielle arrangementer. I februar var det ski- og folkefest på Konnerud. I strålende
vintervær konkurrerte våre fremste skiløpere i så vel klassisk som
sprint. Både Petter Northug og Marit Bjørgen deltok til publikums
store begeistring. Bjørgen vant det klassiske rennet for kvinner, men
i sprinten sto til en forandring ikke våre skihelter øverst på pallen.
Rett før nasjonaldagen åpnet ordføreren en ny lekepark i parken nedenfor sykehuset. Dette var blant annet en jubileumsgave
fra Sparebankstiftelsen DnB NOR på fem millioner kroner, i tillegg
til fem millioner kroner fra Drammen kommune. Her er det laget et
minilandskap for små og store barn som innbyr til leik og moro.
17. mai er alltid et prangende arrangement i Drammen, men det
var ekstra stas å feire nasjonaldagen i byens eget jubileumsår, en
forsmak på flere storslåtte arrangementer som skulle komme.
På Holmen var det bilmesse med gamle og nye biler, og Drammen
Filatelistforening kunne stolt vise fram gamle frimerker fra Drammen, samt byens nye jubileumsfrimerke. Men den virkelig store feiringen av byens jubileum skjedde i uke 24, midt i juni – med kulminering den 19. juni, som var den store jubileumsfesten.
Under Barnas kulturdager, 14.-17. juni, inntok byens yngste
Strømsø og Bragernes Torg. I alt 9000 barn og unge deltok under
disse arrangementene, som rommet alt fra allsang og rock til karneval og gjøglershow.
Lørdag 18. juni åpnet ordføreren det nyrenoverte Strømsø Torg
under stor festivitas med musikk fra Drammen Symfoniorkester og
dansere fra blant annet Attic. Det gjeveste var likevel avdukingen av
den nye vannskulpturen ”Vannpaviljong” i speilglanset stål og med
renn­ende vann, en jubileumsgave fra byens næringsliv. Kunstverket
er utformet av den britiske kunstneren William Pye og gjør seg spesielt godt flombelyst om natten, med en kuppel som stadig skifter
farge.
Da Strømsø Torg var offisielt innviet, bar det av sted til Ypsilon og
Papirbredden hvor det frivillige kulturlivet fremførte en musikalsk
hyllest til byen, Ypsilon-kantaten, med publikum som aktive deltakere stående på Ypsilon-brua.
Søndag 19. juni var den store festdagen, selve by-bursdagen.
Den startet regntung, men utover dagen tittet sola fram og skapte
den perfekte rammen for tusener på tusener av drammensere og
besøkende. På Drammen havn var det omvisning i veteranbåter og
defilering med seilbåter, i tillegg til at ordfører Tore Opdal Hansen
høytidelig åpnet Drammen havns Maritime storstue.
Og så kom kong Harald og dronning Sonja for å feire jubileet
sammen med alle drammenserne. Mange tusen hadde tatt oppstilling da det kongelige følget ankom Papirbredden med K/B Stjernen.
Med ordfører Tore Opdal Hansen og fylkesmann Kirsti Kolle Grøndahl som guider fikk kongeparet omvisning på Ypsilon, Union Scene
og hos glasskunstner Kari Ulleberg. Etter en god lunsj på Papirbredden gikk turen med båt til Honnørbrygga. Derfra gikk kongen og
dronningen til fots gjennom et jublende folkehav til Bragernes Torg
for å se byens prangende festforestilling med mer enn 400 aktører.
Bybursdagen ble rundet av med en konsert med noen av byens
mest profilerte artister: Ess i Ermet, Nora Noor, Jonas Fjeld, DRM og
ikke minst med Donkeyboy som rundet av en strålende bybursdag.
Elvefestivalen 2011 sto også i jubileets tegn i år, med en rekke
arrangementer for store og små, alt fra fristyle-skihopping i elva til
dragebåter og konserter på Bragernes Torg og Gamle Kirkeplass. I
tillegg til de store offisielle arrangementene har det også vært et
utall små og store begivenheter, så byen er blitt feiret som seg hør

New Year’s Eve marked the entrance to the bicentenary year and
celebration on a grand scale, which in fact began before midnight
with the ringing of Bragernes Church bells and a speech by the
Mayor, Tore Opdal Hansen. A dance, song and music show from a
stage set up in the square took the public on a journey back through
history and into the future. A glorious firework display, the best in
Drammen’s history, at exactly midnight welcomed the start of the
bicentenary year.
This has been followed by both official and unofficial arrangements. In glorious weather in February there was a ski festival in
Konnerud where Norway’s foremost skiers competed in classic and
sprint cross-country. The participation of top skiers Petter Northug
and Marit Bjørgen pleased the enthusiastic crowds, with Bjørgen
winning the classic race for women. However, no Norwegians were
among the top three in the sprint competition.
Just before the national day on 17 May the Mayor opened a new
playground in the park below the hospital, thanks to an anniversary
gift of NOK 5 million from the Savings Bank Foundation DnB NOR,
in addition to NOK 5 million from the Drammen Municipality. The
playground includes a landscape in miniature where children of all
ages can play and have fun.
17 May is always a resplendent affair in Drammen, but it was grea­t
fun in particular to celebrate the national day in the town’s own
bicentenary year. It was a sample of several excellent arrangements
which were to follow.
At Holmen there was a car fair with old and new cars, and the
Drammen Philatelist Society could proudly present old stamps
from Drammen as well as the town’s new commemorative stamp.
However, the really big celebration of the town’s anniversary took
place in the middle of June, culminating on the 19 June with the
great anniversary party.
Children had their own cultural days lasting from 14 to 17 June at
Strømsø and Bragernes Squares. Activities ranging from community
singing, rock, carnival and jugglers attracted altogether 9,000 child­
ren.
On Saturday 18 June, under great festivity, the newly renovated
Strømsø Square was opened by the Mayor, and this was accompanied by music from the Drammen Symphony Orchestra and dancers
from among others Attic. All the same, the high point was the unveiling of the Water Pavilion sculpture in mirrored steel with running
water. An anniversary gift from the town’s business sector, this piece
of art has been modelled by the British artist William Pye, and is a
magnificent sight when flood lit at night with a dome constantly
changing colour.
After the official opening of Strømsø Square, the next stop was
Ypsilon Bridge and Papirbredden where voluntary artists performed
a musical tribute to the town, the Ypsilon Cantata, with the public as
active participants standing on the Ypsilon Bridge.
Sunday 19 June was the great day of celebration, the town’s birth­
day. It began with threatening rain clouds, but later on the sun
peeped through, creating the perfect setting for thousands and
thousands of Drammen’s own citizens and visitors. Drammen Harbour sported guided tours in veteran boats and a parade of sailing
boats as well as the ceremonious opening of Drammen Harbour
Maritime Hall by Mayor Tore Opdal Hansen.
Then King Harald and Queen Sonja arrived to celebrate the anniversary with the people of Drammen. Thousands had gathered to
see the arrival of the royal party with K/B Stjernen at Papirbredden.
With the Mayor, Tore Opdal Hansen and the County Commissioner,
Kirsti Kolle Grøndahl as their guides, the royal couple visited Ypsilon Bridge, the Union Scene and the glass designer, Kari Ulleberg.
Following a good lunch at Papirbredden, the tour went by boat
to Honnørbrygga Quay where the King and Queen continued on
foot through jubilant crowds to Bragernes Square to see the town’s
colourful bicentenary show with more than 400 performers. A concert by Drammen’s most acclaimed artists, Ess i Ermet, Nora Noor,
Jonas Fjeld, DRM and not least Donkeyboy rounded off a magnificent town birthday celebration.
The River Festival 2011 also marked the anniversary with a range
of events for adults and children including freestyle ski-jumping in
the river, dragon boats and concerts at Bragernes Square and the
Old Church Square (Gamle Kirkeplass). Further to the large official
arrangements, there have been innumerable big and small events,
so the town’s 200th anniversary has been properly celebrated.
