Cotopaxi Presentation by Ariel Salgado period 1 What is Cotopaxi?? Cotopaxi is a HIGHLY active volcano located in Ecuador. It is the second Highest summit in the country. Cotopaxi means " smooth neck of the moon". Cotopaxi: Who? When Cotopaxi erupted it would destory villages and kill many people. The Andean people honored Cotopaxi as the "Sacred Mountain" the Andean people thought it was the " rain sender" and where the gods lived. Cotopaxi: Where? Cotopaxi is located in the Andes Mountain, in Ecuador. It's part of the Pacific Ring Of Fire. Cotopaxi is just south of Quito and reaches a Height of about 19,347 feet. Cotopaxi: when? Cotopaxi national park was created in 1979. The first documented eruption was in 1534. In 1877 an eruption melted the ice on the northern slope, making it easier to climb. Cotopaxi: Why? Cotopaxi is a destiniation for visitors because of the many activities travelers can do. -Climbing -Mountain Biking - Bird watching -Camping Cotopaxi: Past For centuries natives have worshiped Cotopaxi. There is even evidence that the natives built platforms on which to worship.In 1534 conquistadors began war with locals of what is now Ecuador. They fought on Cotopaxi, and during the fight the volcano erputed. Its most recent eruptions were in 1744,1768, 1877, 1903-1904, and a minor eruption in 1942. Cotopaxi: Present The last eruption was in 1942, making it a still active volcano. Cotopaxi now is a national park, where many people still vist today. Cotopaxi: How? Cotopaxi is a stratovolcano. The easiest route to climb is the northen route. The mountain is clearly visible in the skyline. It is one of the few equatorial glaciers in the world. Cotopaxi: how it shaped life today?? It has brought more visitors to Ecuador.Its bringing in more money for the country.And there are more jobs because natives could get jobs at the national park.
