Malcolm X The Man Who Would . . . The Beginning He was the seventh child of J. Early Little and the fourth of M. Louise Norton Malcolm grew up in Lansing MI His father was from Georgia and a preacher. Marcus Garvey Impact His father was a national and followed Marcus Garvey. His father was the president of the Omaha branch of the UNIA. His mother was a reporter and said that his mother was "an active worker in the Garvey movement." Terrorist Group Malcolm grew up in a proud household whose father was not afraid of anyone. His family was driven out of Omaha by the KKK when he was a baby Home Life He experienced violence not only of whites but his mother and father argued quite a bit. His father also beat his mother and they both beat the children. A Collage His father's death had a major impact on the family. Louise Little was trying to survive with 8 children during the depression years and continue on without her husband. Movin’ Up and Movin’ On He finally dropped out when he was fifteen and went to live with his sister Ella Mae Little Collins in Boston. The Bury Malcolm was attracted to the 'hood' life of Roxbury aka "the Bury" which differed from the bougie section of town. Other blacks looked down on folks from Roxbury. Actin’ Malcolm was disturbed by black who thought themselves better than others putting on phoney accents talking about being in "securities, banking" and the like. He called them "Hill clowns." th 7 Heaven Malcolm was overwhelmed when he arrived in Harlem--it was 7th heaven. "It was in Harlem that Malcolm was 'schooled' in his hustling trade by the experts . . " A ReEducation It was while he was in jail that he came under the influence of the teaching of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, which greatly changed his life.
