The Hay Barn

Project 1 Storyboard

Eric Ericson

Sequence 1

(Establishing Context)

Animation: Blur through Black.

Intro Paragraph: This short story is for those who have or remember a special place.

This place tugs their heart and

 produces emotions upon thinking of it.

Shot description: Group of confident people. Image and text with voiceover throughout.

(Transitions TBD throughout)

Audio: (Throughout?) Smooth, relaxing guitar – Brokeback

Mountain soundtrack guitar strumming or the like.

 happygroup

Sequence 2

Animation: Slide down gap.

Shot Description: Image of old hay barn on a hill.

Narrative: The hay barn sat on top of a large, basically unused old farm barn. It was huge, dangerous, old, and patchy – there were places where the old barn wood floor was bare, others where old hay still laid, seemingly serving no purpose anymore.

 pabarn6

Sequence 3

Animation: Shatter in.

Shot Description: Entrance of a hay barn.

Narrative: The entrance was at the top of a curving hill, and had enormous, tall arches where proud sliding doors once hung.

Humbled, these old, rickety doors instead laid over the entrance as a makeshift way to poorly patch holes in the entrance floor.

Sequence 4

Animation: Page curl.

Shot Description: Inside of a hay barn.

Narrative: Since the opening was open to the elements, the air inside was basically the same as the weather outside, except for the warm, inviting smell of hay.

 Hay_MyLittleBarn2

Sequence 5

Animation: Sweep in.

Shot Description: A hole in a floor.

Narrative: There were a few holes in the floor that gave you a glimpse into the vacant, practically unused barn below. The more time you spent in the hay barn, the better map your memory drew to prevent you from going too near those spots.

 Hole_in_Barn_Floor

Sequence 6

Animation: Dissolve.

Shot Description:

Preferably a rope hanging from a hay barn ceiling.

Narrative: There was one, huge rope that hung from the pinnacle of the ceiling all the way down and connected to a support beam.

 (hay barn rope) thEQGU9P6F

Sequence 7

Animation: Pixelate.

Shot Description: An old wooden ladder or slabs of wood to climb.

Narrative: On the support beams, were makeshift slabs of old wood that served as a ladder at one time, that went all the way up. I never dared to climb much further than 10 feet high.

 (hay barn rope)

Sequence 8

Animation: Key hole.

Shot Description: ratty basketball hoop.

Narrative: One year, my Dad laid down some plywood sheets to suffice as a basketball floor and put up a hoop.

 BasketBallHoopBarnScaffCaneCl01

Sequence 9

Animation: Filled V down.

Shot Description: father and son playing ball.

Narrative: I recall playing horse or one-on-one with my Dad a couple times.

He was up there in years, he’d lived a hard life: retired sergeant of the

Army, full time repairman, preacher, president of the church…

 628x471

Sequence 10

Animation: Wheel.

Shot Description: old man gripping back in pain.

Narrative: His back bothered him so much that whatever game it was, it often ended with him with one hand on his back and his face contorting in pain. Poor guy, just couldn’t catch a break in life.

 old_man_with_back_pain

Sequence 11

Animation: Heart.

Shot Description: someone hiding in barn.

Narrative: I went to the hay barn with my sister,

Andrea, to hide from my dad once. I can’t remember what we were doing prior to hiding, though I imagine it was some miserable, strenuous work in the garden out in the blazing sun.

 25574246

Sequence 12

Animation: Split verticle.

Shot Description: scary older man.

Narrative: I’m still not quite sure how miserable the job could have been to decide to risk hiding from my Dad. The consequence of getting caught would not be pretty – I don’t recall being caught, and I also don’t recall later, further explanation as to where we had been…

 angry_farmer-e1359161881211-274x300

Sequence 13

Animation: Star.

Shot Description: some sort of old passage…in a barn?

Narrative: While Andrea was still around, we would explore the barns many doors and

“secret” passages that led up to the hay barn. We pretended to be some characters of an 80’s show I couldn’t recall, that nevertheless had amazing adventures. When you’ve got nothing to do, you make stuff up – which, in my experience, winds up being the best time you’ll ever have.

Sequence 14

Animation: Inset top right.

Shot Description: a boy, alone, far from anyone.

Narrative: The time I spent in the hay barn with other people made up maybe

1% of the overall time I spent in there. Most of the time, I experienced this place by myself, alone, with no one even close enough to hear a loud yell.

 87634906_LonelyBoy

Sequence 15

Animation: Slide.

Shot Description: boy talking to himself or something similar.

Narrative: The hay barn was a place that heard many of my thoughts that no one else would ever hear. I was alone most all of my free time, but I talked out loud anyway – to this day I still can’t process things without saying them out loud. The hay barn listened, but never offered guidance.

 boy-whisper1-300x207

Sequence 16

Animation: Diagonal box out.

Shot Description: something about secrets.

Narrative: It was simply a place to hold me, loosely, whether I was doing innocent fun things, or secretive bad things. It didn’t judge me, it didn’t care – well it didn’t not care either. I personified it.

 tumblr_leg34ePg7B1qajjdco1_500

Sequence 17

Animation: Roll.

Shot Description: a person somehow personifying objects.

Narrative: Why did I find the need to personify things?

Along with feelings of concern for inanimate objects, I always felt like I was being watched – not in a creepy way, but in a way as if, someone was interested in me. Maybe even loved me. Did I connect with the hay barn because I needed it?

 inanimate-objects-with-googly-eyes-25162-

Sequence 18

Animation: Slide down together.

Shot Description: a boy contemplating things.

Narrative: Did I talk to it because I was alone so much?

Being the unexpected last child of four, everyone had pretty well figured out what to do with their life, except for me.

So I spent a lot of my time just processing what had happened in school that day, or what I wanted to do with my life.

 Screenshot-1432

Sequence 19

Animation: Spin.

Shot Description: a heroic looking man with sword and a wimpy kid watching, or man dreaming.

Narrative: In my 20’s, I had a dream about it, where I envisioned a close friend climbing and conquering it; retrieving a sword, while I stood watching, earning nothing – it really affected me. I wondered if the dream represented how I felt like a failure for not acting on my dreams; for not venturing while others around me did.

 th1E0JTOT1

Sequence 20

Animation: Shatter top right.

Shot Description: sunset.

Narrative: There wasn’t one distinguishable event that split my life into two parts or anything. It was just a place that holds the setting of many of my formative thoughts, responses, and dwelling.

Sequence 21

Animation: Zig zag vertical.

Shot Description: dreamy, nostalgic view of a farm.

Narrative: Sometimes, I revisit places from my past that, for some reason or another, hold some significance or feelings of nostalgia. I think I go there in my mind to assure myself that someone was looking out for me when I was young.

 Hay Barn Walp tangledwing

Sequence 22

Animation: Sweep up.

Shot Description: demolished barn.

Narrative: Now, how do

I deal with the hay barn’s destruction? Has my tendency to personify objects subjected me to an unrealistic feeling of loss?

 thLOFUSHDH

Sequence 23

Animation: Bars vertical.

Shot Description: cheap, modern shed.

Narrative: In its place stands a modern “multipurpose” shed. I am unable to feel anything for it. I miss my confidant, my inanimate companion, my holder of secrets, and comforter of youth.
