Healthy Lunchbox Challenge WHAT The Healthy Lunchbox Challenge is a competition to bring the healthiest lunchboxes to camp! WHEN All summer long we will be learning about how eat healthy, get strong and help the environment! WHO YOU and your group will be competing against the other groups! WHY We want YOU to be as healthy as you can be. Plus the group with the most points wins prizes at the end of each week! Week 1: Passport to Fun Fruits & Veggies Around the World Corn- Mexico A large grainplant that can also be called Maize China – Kiwi Fruit type of berry that grows on a vine. Green plant resembling a tree that comes from the cabbage family Broccoli - North Mediterranean Grow on trees in warm tropical environments grow on a vine like cactus. Dragon Fruit – Mexico/Central/South America Mango- South Asia Watermelon Southern Africa Eggplant - India It’s a fruit! related to tomato/potato Grow from a vinelike flowering plant that originates in the Kalahari Desert Peru - Potatoes grow underground 4th biggest crop Points awarded for bringing Kiwi or Broccoli! Week 2: Deep Space WALL-E is Alone on Earth Collecting Trash Earth is almost unrecognizable. Trains have stopped running, shops are boarded up, and everything is covered in litter. Operation Clean up: Wall-E’s mission is to turn the mounds of garbage that have piled up from food packaging into neat little cubes …BUT WALL-E needs YOUR help 1 Child + 1 Disposable Lunch Every Day = 67 pounds of waste each school year What is a trash-less lunch? Points Awarded for bringing a Trash-less Lunch Box! •Start with a reusable lunchbox, backpack, or briefcase. • Pack your food in reusable containers. • Use a refillable drink bottle. • Include reusable utensils. • Add a cloth napkin. • Stock up on easy-to-pack, healthy foods, such as fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Week 3: Into the Wild Let’s go wild about Wild Fruits and Vegetables! •Water is good for your body and helps you to play longer. •All wild foods are grown naturally and have no unhealthy additives. •Berries are sweet treats that have many of the vitamins we need. •Fruits and Veggies found in the wild can be great snacks. •Nuts are great sources of protein that helps you build muscle Their natural nutrients to help your body become strong and healthy. •Remember never eat a fruit or vegetable you find in the wild without asking permission first! Week 4: ‘MURCA MADE in the USA • American Flag Fruit Skewers Servings: 9 Ingredients 2 bananas (sliced into ¾ inch slices) ½ pint blueberries 1 pint strawberries ( cut in half length ways) Directions Skewers 1-5: Thread 6 blueberries on a skewer, followed by a banana slice, strawberry half, banana slice and finishing up with a strawberry half Skewers 6-11: Thread ½ strawberry followed by a banana slice, alternating three times. Arrange on a platter or tray and adjust the position of your fruit slices to even out the stripes. • • Did you know that over 10,000 years ago peppers could only be found in America? Peppers were originally grown by Native Americans, but today they are found all over the world. Juneberry trees, which are also native to North America, produce small blue, red, or white berries have a unique sweet flavor that hints of almond. Week 5: Young Entrepreneurs Farmer’s markets are good for our bodies! What is a farmer’s market? A farmer’s market is a place where local farmers can bring homegrown items to sell to everyone in their community! When you buy from a Farmer’s Market: •You give back to the local community •You get fresh fruits and vegetables that have no added chemicals! They sell things like: •Bananas •Peppers •Strawberries •Watermelon •Peaches •Nuts •Cucumbers •Squash •Grapes •Oranges •Tomatoes •Potatoes Points awarded for bringing Peaches or Cucumbers! Week 6: Fast and Fun-ious Food is Fuel for our Bodies! Dairy: A glass of milk or yogurt in the morning helps our bones grow big and strong! Vegetables: Carrots help us improve our vision so we can see the world around us Fruits: Start your day off with blueberries to kick start your brain and boost your memory! Proteins: A handful of nuts at lunch can help build muscles and protect our bodies! Grains: Whole-grain breads and crackers give our body more energy! Spring: Asparagus, Leafy Greens, Beets, Oriental Vegetables, Carrots Strawberries, Oranges Winter: Leafy greens: Kale, Collards, and Turnips, Celery Apples Summer: Broccoli, Cucumbers, Peas, Peppers, Sweet Corn Blackberries, Blueberries, Peaches, Watermelon, Cantaloupe Fall: Sweet potatoes, Zucchini, Squash, Pumpkin, Beans, Broccoli, Butterbeans Apples, Grapes Points Awarded for Watermelon and Cucumbers! Week 8: Party Like a Y Star CASTING CALL! Week 9: Color War Did you know different colors of fruits and vegetables have different benefits? White fruits and vegetables like Bananas and Cauliflower help protect you body from sickness! Green fruits and vegetables like honeydew and celery help give your body energy! Blue/Purple fruits and vegetables like blueberries and raisins can help your memory! Red Fruits and vegetables like tomatoes and strawberries help keep our hearts healthy! Points awarded for bringing a Fruit or Vegetable that matches Your Team Color! Week 10: Bummer! End of Summer CONGRATULATIONS YOU DID IT! Now that you’ve have spent the summer eating healthier, here are tips to remember for the school year! •Bring a reusable water bottle with you to school everyday! •Find fruits and vegetable that are in season for you to take as a healthy snack. •Ask your family to visit the local farmer’s market. •Eat whole grains snacks for more energy . •Pack a trash-less lunch box to help eliminate waste. •Make sure your plate is full of different colors.
