 A “Gentle Wind” helps us learn to be comfortable with the
uncomfortable
 A “Gentle Wind” helps us move into & stay in the ‘Stretch
Zone”

A “ Gentle Wind” can be seen and felt in nature

Gentle Wind
 In nature a “Gentle Wind” leads to movement &
growth in our ecological system
 In the ecology of our organizations we need to create “
Gentle Winds” to move the Positive Culture forward
with resulting growth being an improved Quality of
Life for the people we serve

Gentle Wind
( Precautions)
 Without any wind our organizations end up in the
“Dead Zone” or “Comfort Zone”

 “For two years, scientists sequestered themselves in an
artificial environment called Biosphere 2. Inside their selfsustaining community, the Biospherians created a number
of mini-environments, including a desert, rain forest, even
an ocean. Nearly every weather condition could be
simulated except one, wind. Over time, the effects of their
windless environment became apparent. A number of trees
bent over and even snapped. Without the stress of wind to
strengthen the wood, the trunks grew weak and could not
hold up their own weight.”

Large trees started to
show distress. The top was
becoming too heavy to hold
and the limbs were sinking
towards the
ground. Biosphere 2 had no
way of introducing
wind. There was no wind in
the Biosphere. Soon, the
trees snapped in half. The
lack of wind was the trees
downfall. A Gentle Wind
enables trees to bend,
stretch, & grow .The Gentle
Wind is needed to help trees
become stronger.

is applied as a continuous gentle pressure to stimulate
movement in attitudes, beliefs & actions
 The “Gentle Wind’ helps us to move into the “Stretch
Zone” where good quality care is our focus

Using A Gentle Wind To Create
A Shift In Thinking
The Developmental Disabilities profession will view
behavior supports in a completely different perspective.
 The new view would be that when the term “behavior” is
used, our profession would ask how could we help this
person experience a better life.
As a profession we will focus on helping people to feel
physically and emotionally safe.
 Our conversations will be about the strengths & value of
the people we serve

Using A Gentle Wind To Create
A Shift Thinking
 The role of our profession will be to strive toward improving
a person’s self-esteem while assisting them to experience an
improved quality of life.
To achieve a change in outcomes the county board & provider
network will focus on what is possible. This will be done by
caring people coming together to form strong partnerships &
supportive services with planning directed toward an
improved quality of life.

Making A Difference In Ohio
With Collaboration & Partnerships
We have made great strides in Ohio in providing services to
people who experience a developmental disability. The term
“MR” is now in our history books. The next challenge and step
is to move behavior management and the associated aversive &
restrictive practices into the history books.
Let’s use a Gentle Wind to have new conversations focused on
Success and Quality of Life for the people we serve
By coming together to form strong partnerships between
families, professionals & organizations, we can collaborate on
respectful ways to support the people we care about to have an
improved “Quality of Life
