Book Background
• Date: c. A.D. 60-63, while Paul was in prison in
Rome (Acts 28:30-31; Eph. 3:1,13; 4:1; 6:20)
• Occasion: Paul used his time in prison to remind
the Ephesian Christians of two very important
truths: their spiritual wealth in Christ (Eph. 1-3)
and their spiritual walk in Christ (Eph. 4-6). Paul
may have heard of the condition of the
Ephesians from Epaphras and was prompted by
the Holy Spirit to write to them (Col. 1:7-8;
4:12-13).
6
Book Background
• Literary Style: The book of Ephesians is an
“epistle” (letter) like the book of Romans
(16:22) or Colossians (4:16). It must be studied
like a letter which is written and sent from one
person to another.

Apostleship of Paul
“An Apostle of Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 1:1)
Jesus’ Commission of Paul As An Apostle
Acts 9:15-17: But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto
me, to bear my name before the Gentiles and kings, and the children of Israel: for I will
show him how many things he must suffer for my name's sake. And Ananias
departed, and entered into the house; and laying his hands on him said, Brother Saul,
the Lord, even Jesus, who appeared unto thee in the way which thou camest, hath
sent me, that thou mayest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Spirit.
Acts 22:14-15,21: And he said, The God of our fathers hath appointed thee to know
his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice from his mouth. For thou
shalt be a witness for him unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard ... And he
said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee forth far hence unto the Gentiles.
Acts 26:16-17: But arise, and stand upon thy feet: for to this end have I appeared unto
thee, to appoint thee a minister and a witness both of the things wherein thou hast
seen me, and of the things wherein I will appear unto thee; delivering thee from the
people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom I send thee…

Ephesians 1
Lessons for Today
• Preaching the gospel and converting souls in a new
area may involve great obstacles, great oppositions,
and great opportunities (1:1; 1 Cor. 15:32; 16:8;
2 Cor. 1:8-10). What kind of obstacles, oppositions,
and opportunities do Christians face today while trying
to preach the gospel?
• Christians are not “apostles” (1:1), but they are still
commissioned by God to preach the gospel today. How
are Christians commissioned by God to do the Lord’s
work today (Acts 8:4)?
21
Ephesians 1
Lessons for Today
• Christians in the local church are to live as “saints”
(holy, set apart from the world) and “faithful”
(trustworthy, dependable) Christians (1:1; Col. 1:2).
How can Christians demonstrate to God and to others
that they are “saints” and “faithful”?
• In what way are “grace” and “peace” a part of the
Christian life today (1:2; 2 Pet. 1:2)?
• God is your heavenly “Father” and provides for you
(1:2). What does God provide for you as your “Father”
(Jas. 1:17)?
22
Ephesians 1
Lessons for Today
• Jesus Christ is your “Lord” and rules over you (1:2).
What responsibilities do you have to Jesus Christ as
your “Lord” (Rom. 13:14; Phil. 3:20; 2 Thess. 1:12;
3:12)?
• Like Ephesus, a local church can start out “faithful”
(1:1) and then lose its “first love” (Rev. 2:4). Are you in
a local church that is gradually losing its “first love”?
How do you know if a local church is losing its “first
love”?
23
Ephesians 1
Lessons for Today
• Paul prayed, praised, and preached in times of trial …
in prison in Rome (1:3). How can we do the same?
Why should we do the same?
• How can we show our thankfulness to God for our
spiritual riches (1:3-14)?
• What are some spiritual blessings that we have “in
Christ” that are not mentioned in Ephesians 1:3-14?
24
Ephesians 1
Lessons for Today
• How does recalling our spiritual blessings “in Christ”
help us to be more holy and faithful Christians
(1:3-14)?
• Why is it good to thank God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit
in your prayers for what they have done to redeem
you (1:3-14)?
• Have you entered into Christ through repentance and
baptism (Gal. 3:27) in order to receive all spiritual
blessings? If not, what is holding you back?
25
Ephesians 1
Lessons for Today
• What can a Christian do today to demonstrate his faith
to others (1:15; Col. 1:4)?
• What can a Christian do today to demonstrate his love
for other Christians? If one is not careful, one’s love
can be lost as is seen in the later history of the church
at Ephesus (1:15; Rev. 2:4)
• What are some prayers of thanksgiving and
intercession that Christians can offer up to God
(1:16; Col. 1:9; 1 Thess. 2:13; 5:17)?
26
Ephesians 1
Lessons for Today
• Why is it important to have the knowledge of God in
an age where there is an explosion of secular and
worldly knowledge (1:17; Col. 1:9; 2:3)?
• In what way are hope, riches, and power resources in
your life today (1:18-19; 3:16; 4:4; Col. 1:4,11)?
• How does Jesus demonstrate his authority over all
things (1:20-21; Mt. 28:18; Rev. 12:10)?
27
Ephesians 1
Lessons for Today
• How can the church today show she is subject to
Christ as “head” (1:22; 4:15; 5:23; Col. 1:18; 2:19)?
• How can the church practice being the “body” of
Christ - a body connected to the head and connected
to other members of the body (1:23; 4:4; Rom. 12:4-5;
1 Cor. 10:17; 12:12-25)?
• What can be done today to preserve and promote the
undenominational nature (“body”) of the Lord’s
church (1:23; 2:16; 4:4-6; Col. 3:15)?
28
Ephesians 2
Lessons for Today
• Is the spiritual condition of a non-Christian today any
different than the Ephesians before their conversion?
A non-Christian is dead in sin, following the world and
the Devil, and lost! What should a non-Christian be
thinking and doing today to remove himself from this
terrible condition (2:1-3; Rom. 3:23; 6:23)?
• Why must Christians be busy today in personal
evangelism of the lost (2:1-3; Acts 8:4; Jude 22-23)?
29
Ephesians 2
Lessons for Today
• Read the following passages and write out what man
must do to be saved from sin: Romans 1:16; 10:17;
Mark 16:15-16; John 8:24; Hebrews 11:6; Acts 2:38;
17:30-31; Acts. 8:37-38; Romans 10:9-10; Acts 22:16;
Galatians 3:26-27; 1 Peter 3:21; Ephesians 2:10;
Titus 2:14.
• How does a person sin? Is sin inherited or passed on to
us involuntarily by our parents? Is sin (transgression of
God’s law) a choice that one makes? Can one choose
to walk in sin, live in sin, or do sin (2:1-3; 1 Jn. 3:4)?
30
Ephesians 2
Lessons for Today
• What would happen to mankind without God’s great
mercy, great love, great grace, and great kindness
(2:4-7; Tit. 3:4-7)?
• What would happen to mankind without obedient
faith (2:8-9; 2 Thess. 1:8; Heb. 5:9)?
• How can Christians stay busy walking in the “good
works” that are prepared by God? List some “good
works” that are prepared by God (revealed in
scripture) that Christians need to be doing today
(2:10; 1 Cor. 15:58; Tit. 3:8,14).
31
Ephesians 2
Lessons for Today
• What is the spiritual condition of the unconverted soul
today (2:11-12)?
• What can Christians do to busy themselves in personal
evangelism of the lost (2:11-12; Acts 8:4; Rom. 9:1;
10:1; Jude 22-23)?
• What can Christians do to promote “peace” and unity
(“one”) in the local church today (2:13-18; 4:4-6;
Phil. 2:1ff; Rom. 14:1ff)?
32
Ephesians 2
Lessons for Today
• What denominational practices show that the Law of
Moses is still in force for some even though Paul said
that it was “abolished” (2:15)?
• How does the “one” way described by Paul (2:18)
differ from the “choose-the-church-of-your-choice”
way promoted by modern-day denominationalism?
• Are there “apostles and prophets” in the Lord’s church
today? Defend your answer with scripture.
33
Ephesians 2
Lessons for Today
• Is the local church of which you are a member
“growing” (2:21)? What can you do promote growth?
• Is the local church of which you are a member
“together” (2:21-22)? What can you do to promote
togetherness and unity in the local church?
34
Ephesians 3
Lessons for Today
• Can Christians today still suffer for the cause of Christ
on behalf of others (3:1; 2 Tim. 1:8; Philemon 23)?
• Can people still read and understand God’s word today
(3:4; 5:17; Col. 1:9; 1 Jn. 5:20)?
• Are there “apostles and prophets” in the Lord’s church
today (3:5)?
• How can Christians be ministers (servants) of the
gospel like Paul was (3:7; 6:21; Phil. 2:25; Col. 4:7;
1 Tim. 4:6; Philemon 13; Heb. 6:10)?
35
Ephesians 3
Lessons for Today
• What does the Lord’s church today need to do to
demonstrate to others the “manifold wisdom of God”
(3:10; 4:4-6; Mt. 16:18; Rom. 16:16)?
• How can Christians express their boldness and
confidence in today’s world (3:12; 6:19; Heb. 3:14;
4:16; 10:19,35; 1 Jn. 2:28; 3:21; 4:17; 5:14)?
• What tribulations do Christians experience today? Do
some Christians faint at tribulations (6:13; Acts 14:22;
Rom. 5:3; 8:35; 12:12; Rev. 1:9; 2:9-10; 7:14)?
36
Ephesians 3
Lessons for Today
• What cause do Christians have today to bow their
knees in prayer like Paul (3:14)?
• What strength and power can be gained from
following the words of the Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ
(1:19; 3:16; Col. 1:11)?
• How can Christians show they have a love for Christ
that is “rooted and grounded” (3:17; Col. 1:23; 2:7)?
37
Ephesians 3
Lessons for Today
• How is the love of Christ demonstrated in our life
(3:19; Rom. 8:35; 2 Cor. 5:14)?
• How does God demonstrate that he is able to do what
is best for us (3:20; Rom. 11:23; 2 Cor. 9:8;
Heb. 11:19)?
• What can Christians do to glorify God in the church
(3:21)?

3) fellowshipping those who practice these sinful
things (vv. 7-10); 4) deceived into thinking that nothing
is wrong with these things or the people who do them
(v. 6); and 5) actually practicing these sinful things
yourself (vv. 3-5).
