People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:6-13 8Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. Luke then concludes this third chapter of his gospel with Jesus’ genealogy, his family tree: ‘Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry. He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph, the son of Heli, the son of Matthat …’ If we take the time to examine the genealogy given by Luke and compare it closely with the genealogy that Matthew gives us, we will find some discrepancies, as critical scholars have been quick to point out. Why does Matthew give one list and Luke another? Well, without getting too technical, there are different possible solutions to this. One of the most common is the idea that Matthew gives us the genealogy of Joseph, and Luke simply gives us the genealogy of Mary. Remember, Matthew was writing his gospel to Jews, and to them the most important issue is not the virgin birth, but whether Jesus is the legal descendant of David, for the Messiah must be of the lineage of David, and that lineage legally comes through Joseph. When we read Luke’s gospel, however, we find that Luke’s preoccupation is not so much with Joseph, but with Mary from whom he obviously got his early data and information. It is very possible that what Luke gives us is the family history of Mary, who also by virtue of her father, is a descendant of David, and that would solve the difficulties. ~ R. C. Jesus, the hitherto unknown man from Nazareth, is the Son of God. The reader should not be surprised, in the light of Luke 1:32, 35, but this is a declaration addressed to Jesus himself, confirmingwhat he has no doubt already been told by his parents, and what he was already aware of at the age of twelve (Luke 2:49). Most interpreters find in these words an echo of the first introduction of God’s servant in Isaiah 42:1, upon whom God puts his Spirit, and possibly also of Psalm 2:7, which was understood as looking forward to a messianic king of the line of David. Such echoes would indicate Jesus’s messianic role as well as his special relationship with God.” ~ R. T. France, Luke, ed. Mark L. Strauss and John H. Walton, 58 Psalm 2 1Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? 2The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the LORD and against his Anointed One. 3“Let us break their chains,” they say, “and throw off their fetters.” Psalm 2 4The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. 5He rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying, 6“I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.” 7I will proclaim the LORD’s decree: He said to me, “You are my son; today I have become your father. 8Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. 9You will break them with a rod of iron; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.” Psalm 2 10Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. 11Serve the LORD with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling. 12Kiss his son, or he will be angry and your way will lead to your destruction, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him. Isaiah 42:1 “Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will bring justice to the nations.” Isaiah 49:5-6 5And now the LORD says—he who formed me in the womb to be his servant to bring Jacob back to him and gather Israel to himself, for I am honored in the eyes of the LORD and my God has been my strength—6he says: “It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.” Revelation 22:1-2 1Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.
