Budget

in Library/IT funds = $8,775,000
Total Health Sciences Collections Budget FY14: $2,687,850 base plus
$100,000 Library/IT funds=$2,787,850
Total Health Sciences Budget spent on electronic resources FY14:
$2,552,850 or 91.6% of total budget (includes databases, e-journals,
e-books, and streaming video).
Health Sciences Budget in FY07 was $2,518,327 so budget has
increased by only 10.7% in seven years, but resources increase by
5-10% or more in a single year.

2013 $ 97,954

2017 $209,748

American Academy of Pediatrics Redbook Online
FY13: $ 645
FY14: $1,444
Going forward
The Library will be unable to maintain its electronic resources going
forward if budget and pricing trends continue.
In the past we have added new resources each year, now we will need
to start canceling or cost sharing. The Library will work with
constituents to determine which resources are retained.
Clinical tools are one area where we will need to cancel. BMJ Clinical
Evidence has been identified by the liaison librarians as a candidate for
cancellation .
Currently the Library also subscribes to Dynamed, ACP PIER (soon to
become ACP Smart Medicine), First Consult (soon to be absorbed into
Clinical Key), and Essential Evidence Plus.
Publisher trend in the health sciences
McGraw-Hill: Removed all health sciences e-books
from the purchase market, now we can only rent
them in products such as Access Medicine and
Access Pediatrics, etc… Froze changes to number
of simultaneous users.
Elsevier Health Sciences : Removed all clinical health
sciences e-books from the purchase market, will
only be able to rent them from 2014 onward.
MDConsult/FirstConsult will cease to exist in 2014,
replaced with a database called Clinical Key.
Clinical Key Trial Jan 15- Feb 14, 2014

Will also be posted at

Going forward – online books
Online books, especially textbooks, will be the other area where the
library will consult with constituents to determine which products to
retain to best meet campus needs.
Clinical Key: Do we get it? Can we afford it? Many popular books, but
we rent and do not own. Editions can change mid-semester, library has
no control. Currently we pay $146,399 for MDConsult/Firstconsult.
Clinical Key will cost more than $200,000.
The Access Products – do we upgrade to site licenses so that students
do not face turnaways? Do we enable the Custom Curriculum feature
so that health sciences faculty can use the products more fully in the
education process? Currently we pay $127,676 for a limited number of
users. Unlimited users would at least double our costs.
Custom Curriculum
Instructors can:
• Create and populate assignments from all of the Access online
medical resources licensed by their institution, including textbooks,
videos, and case files
• Include Q&A tests, either drawing from the existing question bank or
by authoring their own questions and dictating a minimum passing
score
Learners can:
• See which assignments are expected of them and which dates their
assignment are due
• Keep track of their own assignment progress and quiz scores
Journals
The Library of the Health Sciences projects it will
spend $1,884,518 on journals in FY14.
If the Library chooses to maintain databases, journals
will need to be cut.
2014 sample of prices:
Brain Research $24,767
New England Journal of Medicine $6,518
