2012-13 UK Scholars

Benefits – Scholar Awards

 Scholarships provide a contribution towards living expenses of $5,000 per month – or specific award contribution

 A number of memberships

 Sickness and accident benefit coverage

 Visa sponsorship

 Substantial pre-departure support, including a Finalists Workshop (March) and a 3-day Orientation Programme (July)

 Once on-the-ground in the US, further support is offered by the Institute of

International Education (IIE)

 Approximately 20 scholarships are offered each year to UK citizens

Benefits – Postgraduate Awards

 Scholarships provide a contribution towards tuition fees and living expenses up to $50,000 for the first year of postgraduate study

 A number of memberships

 Sickness and accident benefit coverage

 Visa sponsorship

 Substantial pre-departure support, including a Finalists Workshop (March) and a 3-day Orientation Programme (July)

 Once on-the-ground in the US, further support is offered by the Institute of

International Education (IIE)

 Approximately 25 scholarships are offered each year to UK citizens for the first year of postgraduate or doctoral study, or for 'special student research'.

 Fulbright interviews: Jan - Feb

Awards on Offer - Postgraduate

The following awards are offered for Postgraduate Study in the US at any US institution:

 All-disciplines Postgraduate Awards: Postgraduate or doctoral study or ‘special student research’ in any subject.

 Alistair Cooke Award in Journalism: Master’s degree in

Journalism or in a specialist subject leading to a career in Journalism.

 Elsevier Bibliometric Analysis Award: Postgraduate study in any interdisciplinary field requiring bibliometric analysis.

 Leon Jaworski International Law Award : Master's degrees that relate directly to international law.

And at specific institutions:

 Postgraduate Student Award at The New School : To undertake a

Masters degree in any subject/discipline at the New School in New York

 Hubert H. Humphrey School Award in Public Policy, Affairs and

Planning: to pursue research with a global policy focus, within any of the degree programmes (excluding all joint degrees) at the Hubert H

Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota, including the MPA, MPP and MDP programmes.

Fulbright Awards to the US

 Hubert H. Humphrey School Award in Public Policy, Affairs and

Planning: to pursue research with a global policy focus, within any of the degree programmes at the Hubert H Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of

Minnesota. Deadline for applications is February 2015 (tbc).

We also offer awards to UK citizens seeking an MBA at Harvard and for study or research on EU affairs, European integration or EU-US

(Schuman Award). Deadlines vary for each of these awards.

Eligibility

 UK citizen

 PG - Minimum 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent) from any university

 Scholar – Minimum PhD (or on

PhD programme

 May not hold US citizenship, be a dual citizen, hold a green card, or reside in the US at time of application

Fulbright Staff and Alumni at Annual

Reception

Successful Applicants

 Are well-rounded

 Have demonstrated academic achievement

 Have shown leadership skills and initiative and have been active inside the classroom/lab as well as outside

 Possess a curiosity for the US and American culture

 Serve as good ambassadors for the Fulbright Programme and for the UK in the US

 Indicate a clear reason for selecting universities and a desire to give back to the UK and the Fulbright Commission upon returning home

The Application Process

 Online application (provide biographical information, academic & extracurricular accomplishments & study plans.)

 Indicate one or more institutions (& specific degree programmes, if applicable) applicant has or will apply to, & provide reasons for choosing institute(s).

 A personal statement & study objective statement

 Three letters of recommendations are required.
