Goethe started writing Faust when he was in his 20’s (born 1749-died in 1832) Goethe’s Version God makes a bet with the Devil (Mephistopheles) Faust starts a journey with Mephistopheles for true satisfaction Faust falls in love with Margarete (Gretchen) Margarete goes crazy after getting pregnant and kills her baby but is later redeemed. Marlowe’s Version Faust learns magic from two men (Valdes and Cornelius) Faust conjures up Mephastophilis Makes a 24 year compact with Lucifer to learn and use magic Faust becomes a prankster like person with his magic and uses it to entertain other of royal value. The moment the 24 years end, Lucifer sent devil to drag Faust to Hell. Similarities and Differences Differences Goethe’s character Wagner has no interest in magic Marlowe’s version has no love interest for Faust. Goethe’s version has Mephistopheles appear to Faust Similarities (not many) Taken to Hell Love for the super natural Goethe’s influences He fell in love with Anne Catharina Schoenkopf in 1766 His sister died in 1777 He traveled to Italy and Rome in 1786 The Will of the Wisp In the Walpurgis night scene, the Will O’ the Wisp is featured. He is well known in European Culture as specifically Germanic. He is rumored to be a spirit of the dead and will carry you’re soul into the other realm. He was not featured in Marlowe’s version.
