By Taylor Cooper, Jess Mooney, Rachel Muxlow, Ria Stevens, Alice Long & Courtenay Stevens. “ A tall man stood in the doorway. He held a crushed Stetson hat under his arm while he combed his long, black, damp hair straight back. Like the others he wore blue jeans and a short denim jacket.” “This was Slim, the jerkline skinner. His hatchet face was ageless. He might have been thirty-five or fifty.” “His hands, large and lean, were as delicate in their action as those of a temple dancer.” Slim was highly respected.. “There was a gravity in his manner and a quiet so profound that all talk stopped when he spoke. His authority was so great that his word was taken on any subject, be it politics or love.” Slim is the "prince of the ranch." He’s the most important on the ranch: strong, fairminded, practical, non-talkative, and exceptionally good at what he does. He is a god among men, and his word on any subject is law. He decides who is wrong and right, who’s been naughty, and who’s been nice. The other men recognize his superiority and never question his actions or decisions. Slim is also sensitive, but not overly so. He is the only one who understands George’s affinity for Lennie, and also the only one to comprehend the gravity of George’s final act for Lennie. Slim is dedicated and committed to being the best he can. “Slim comes in sometimes two, three times a night. Slim’s a real skinner. He looks out for his team.” Here his team is the animals he cares for. He could be lonely but cant show it to the men, so therefore spends a lot of time with the horses. The significance of his name.. Define: Slim being of delicate or slender build This could refer to Slim, by him being sensitive and caring, and his personality being small and simple, or he pretends to his men that he is. Slim is loyal, and well respected. He doesn’t say much, but when he does, everyone listens and everyone agrees. Slim’s Dream.. Slim doesn’t show that he has a dream to any of the characters. He doesn’t like to show any weaknesses to the other men. But, just like anybody else living in America at the time, Slim probably wants the American dream.
